I am a soon-to-be grad with a year of systems / ERP experience. Im wondering, if i pursue a business systems analyst new grad role ar Vmware, how hard is it to pivot to different roles if i dont like it? i guess what im asking is what kind of career paths have you guys seen in systems? I admit its not my ideal role (interested in analytics) but figured it could be a way to get my foot in the door at a good company. can you share some general thoughts about fear of being silo’d? Is this a realistic fear?
Somewhat realistic, you may need to make a lateral move in the future if it's for something you're more interested in. I started out in a similar role working on an ERP system. Since then I've had offers to move to boutique management consulting firms and along with top tech and accounting firms. Just have to know how to market yourself. And if you're interested in analytics, seek out opportunities to work with an analytics team/project internally for exposure.
