Hello! I have Airbnb G10 offer (240 base + 25% bonus + RSUs 1.1M/4yr = 575k/yr) and expecting Meta E6 tomorrow. Airbnb role is in infra for which I have specialized skills. Meta role is general SWE archetype in Monetization pillar. I value WLB, or at least flexibility. I have two kids under 3. Meta culture feels more fast paced compared to Airbnb. Airbnb is remote; Meta is hybrid. Any insights from folks at Airbnb or Meta in this regard? Expectations for an external Staff hire? TC is secondary to WLB/culture in my current situation, but obviously important. I fully expect TC to be 600k+ by the time I sign an offer. Does anyone know the max offer for either company (seems high 600s or even 700+ for Meta per levels.fyi) , or any insights into bands? It would be a great data point. I am not trying maximize TC, but there is no harm in negotiating. Which company would you pick if the TC for both is ballpark? Blind tax: ~500k depending on stock price YoE: 10+ Not at Oracle. Using my friend's account to avoid doxxing myself. #Airbnb #Meta
Noted, thank you.
Airbnb offer doesn’t make any sense because in 75 k you will loose 50 k in tax does 2 k per month make you happy .?. Meta might reach 700 k but you might have bad wlb and grinding all the time
Airbnb offer will go up once I have Meta offer. Even at 600+, 100k more per year is nothing to sneeze at :)
I’ve worked at both, and am G10 at Airbnb. Your offer is in the lower half of G10 TC, so there might be some room for negotiation. Airbnb has better WLB than Meta, IME. There’s plenty not to like about Airbnb, but it’s better than Meta IMO. Airbnb has way less junior eng and so staff engineers theoretically need to do more on their own, in practice we seem to give a lot of leeway to external hires in perf for the first year or so.
Thanks for the great insights. Any pointers on what a good G10 offer should look like? What is the top 25 percentile offer? I frankly think Meta will be 650+, and Airbnb will hopefully match or come close to it.
I’m not sure about top 25 but I think median is closer to 250 salary, 1.2M equity
With your WLB requirements, probably Airbnb.
If you value WLB do not go to meta, E6 is especially stressful because now 1/4 of the engs are e6 and above and some of the E6 here are really good at politics. If you are not good at politics you better get ready to work 12 hours a day.
How were the interviews? Does Airbnb level you up from current level or it allows only lateral for target loops? I'd go Airbnb even if Meta offer is slightly higher for better WLB
Airbnb leveling was decided after the interviews based on interview perf. They had multiple positions open for different levels. So, yes, there is a potential for upleveling; although IMHO the leveling process was fair. G10 tends to be slightly higher than comparable staff level positions in other companies per levels.fyi
Interviews were medium+ level of difficulty for both. Not much out of ordinary. The SD, experience & behavioral has a lot more weightage at Staff than coding. Airbnb coding was easy. I messed up one of the Meta coding rounds but still passed HC (discussed algo, but didn't finish coding for the second problem) SD could be considered challenging by some; but it was more of a free flowing discussion IME. Questions were either general SD questions (refer to Alex Xu books or grokking) or based on my background/domain expertise. Key is to demonstrate depth in at least a few parts of the system.
Stay at Oracle?
Meta E6 here. Stay away from this place if you can. The WLB is non existent and the Monetization org is considered a pretty lousy one.
Airbnb’s base can be higher, as you mentioned you should be able to expect 600K after negotiating.
Following for updates. Good luck!🍀
