I used to intern at a startup. I asked if they would want me as full-time, they said okay and gave me a call with a salary number. I already had higher offers so I asked if it was possible to go up a bit. They said they would discuss it and get back to me. A few days later, they call me and say the "CEO doesn't feel like you're excited and we can't go any higher". So I said let me see a full written offer letter to consider and they said ok and ghosted me. Did I mess up somewhere?
Foget them unless you really see a future there
I agree - they’re cheap
They’re doing it right. Culture fit and mission agreement is more important than TC maximizers.
This is dumb. I love when start ups are like “woah you wanna talk money?! Must not be a fit!” Founders get way too bent out of shape spending “their” “hard” “earned” money (i.e. Investment from outside deep pockets). People can believe in the mission and also believe they should be paid their worth. I worked at a start up paying next to nothing an hour when I was in my very early career. Eventually rent caught up to all of us and we started asking for more money. We were told we didn’t believe in the mission and to be more grateful. The thing was that most of us DID believe in the mission, but Eventually the poaching offers from outside companies were so ludicrously higher than our pay that we all bolted. And then we were all served fake legal papers about our non-compete.
I don’t really care what someone who’s never run a successful startup thinks. The fact is, those who have understand hiring is the most important task, and early on, (<50 people), having mission-driven, culture fit is important. You can ask for more, but it better be in equity. That proves you want skin in the game.
Post the company name si everyone knows to avoid them.
Wtf is "CEO doesn't feel like you're excited". If your company cannot afford to match other offer, just say it. Glad you dodged this bullet.
Ceo. Lol. You can tell them it’s a compliment that the ceo actually had to make the decision. You dodged a bullet.
You did nothing wrong. Being excited for an employer shouldn't mean you take a financially negative decision
'We feel you are not excited enough so we won't give you 120%. But for 100% you are excited enough. '
