L6 PM, been at L6 for 5+ years now. I was rated TT back to back in 2021 and 2022 cycles and my manager and I started writing a promo doc around mid 2022 with the focus being to submit in Q3 cycle but realistically expect it to go through in Q1’23 cycle. During the process, he left Amazon and next 6 months, the manager role was vacant so there was no one to continue the promo doc. New manager said he needs more time to evaluate if I’m ready and in a few months hired someone from his previous team to take up an open role on our team and gave her additional scope to set her up for promo. Her promo went through recently. My new manager rated me HV3 last cycle and based on high level conversations with him very likely it will be the same this cycle too. I’ve asked him point blank what are his thoughts on my promo and he said he doesn’t see my on the slate for at least the next 2 cycles. I admit that I made a couple mistakes during this process. Firstly, the Director kept saying that the new manager will come in soon and continue the process so I waited instead of aggressively pushing my own doc, which I shouldn’t have. Additionally, I think I also gave the new manager benefit of doubt to longer than I should’ve given that his intentions were clear. Given that changing teams will mean proving myself in a new environment and slow down the promo process, what do I do now ? P.S. Can’t leave Amazon for at least 2 more years due to visa issues Tc - 280k Yoe - 8 #tech #amazon

My friend, never lobby for promotion. You have been denied what should be yours, and have been blatantly disregarded. L7 promotion at Amazon is tough, and political. At the moment, You work in an environment where you feel you have to justify your worth to move to the next level. You need to change your approach. Start looking for external opportunities. Don’t talk about promo anymore. Surprise them with an external offer. If they really want you, they would give you what you deserve. All the best!
Your new manager doesn’t want to promote you, period. Unfortunately your luck ran out when your previous supporting manager left. Find a new manager who is supportive and start, they might even use the information from previous group.
Yeah that’s the option I’m leaning towards. If I get it in a couple years then will reevaluate sticking around longer at Amazon, else leave once visa issues are sorted
