I switched out of faang after 2 years because i was dying of boredom and wanted to try a smaller company, now im getting bored again. How do you avoid this. Tc 250k
Wherever you go, there you are
If you don’t wanna move up the corporate ladder, try to move teams or projects within the same company.
Maybe look for something outside your job
Are you getting bored because you are finishing up all your tasks because they are easy, or are you doing the bare minimum because you feel like you won't learn anything new by doing the work in front of you. Have you considered taking some of the excess time you do have and doing something that you do want to do within the context of your work? Or is it that you find it hard to get started on your own without someone asking for work from you, or without you having an official mandate?
I think ive reached a point where most of my tasks are easy and the ones that dont seem easy are usually tedious Yeah it can be hard to dig into entirely new and interesting areas because management would prefer me handle the never ending backflow of work in my domain
Management is insentivised to keep things the same because making a change for you will have a ripple effect on others who unlike you don't like change. Consider seeking employment in companies that are doing a lot of things and want people to be "nimble". Company will likely pivot around aimlessly for a while which is uncomfortable some people, but might with our for you.
My general arc in my career so far for jobs has been: Year 1: bust my ass. Work is either exciting or at least challenging and I’m learning a lot. I am miserable because I am putting 120% into my job. Year 2: disillusionment. I start to see the cracks and seams of the colpany, my team, and my work. I start figuring out how much I can get away with. i try to fix some of them but inevitably it doesn’t work. I am miserable because I am angry at the the problems I see (slow promo, bad coworkers, low impact work, cultural problems) Year 3: coast. I have accepted the problems and now it’s just a job for a paycheck. I still perform well but it’s the bare minimum for me. I am miserable because I am bored, but at least I’m not working 10 hour days anymore. I start looking for the next thing I then generally job hop for a bigger raise and restart this cycle. The general theme is that I am miserable at work regardless of whether or not I’m bored. I think I just really hate work. It feels so bad to see my days and years wasted licking boot. But most of us all have to work
Hobbies outside of work
Yeah, just spend 40 hours every work doing something you don't like first. You can have both a great job you enjoy working at and hobbies outside of work.
Shooting my shot, but let's start a company from the ground up. You me and my Ukrainian friend Or at least consulting
Become an influencer
I change teams every 2 years. It sucks because constant new learning and establishing myself but I’m never bored. Trying to keep this up for 6 more years or so so I can retire.
