This dude is a “content creator” for Slack. Yes, he’s paid to advertise for “developer advocacy” whatever that might mean. In this video he says he makes $16,250 a month after taxes doing that: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Ch2kQMdDl9c/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= His LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeremiah-peoples-7b2a65185 He probably makes more than most of the SWEs who build the product that Slack makes money on. So he’s a developer advocate, but earns more than the devs themselves lol. Why bother with coding, Leetcode, learning CS concepts when people are just doing random shit and making more than us? And clowning on us in the same breath? This dude has probably never heard of Leetcode and yet here we are slogging TC: 215k
I think it's easy to forget what it takes to be hired as a DevRel advocate. It's essentially SA+PM+SWE+Marketing and some community management, the competition is high.
A glorified tiktoker? Please. Dude has 2 years of work experience in the Air Force? What tech products are they building exactly?
You need reach as well. Imagine what Linus Tech Tips is bringing home with 15 million followers on YouTube. Some of the dev advocates have produced content for years to get where they are.
That seems like 300k Tc before taxes. As a SWE I make 450k. I am not sure what's the sell here.
You are probably senior though.
Sure just leave out the part about him having 6 years experience in the Air Force and 2 years on youtube independently. Some people’s talents are worth more than yours OP
Lmao Air Force? Are you kidding me? They building lots of products in the Air Force? What a joke that people defend this and then start crying when these 🤡 companies start firing people
He only makes more than the Amazon new grads, he has 7+ yoe. You'll be there someday lil bro
He clowns on Apple new grads and mid levels too
Who hurt you? oops Amazon.
PS - i too rant at tiktokers. But whatever said above, is probably correct. If you can convince people to sell, they'll buy, the world's a marketplace. In my country tiktokers are called to the G and M offices and given a grand welcome and the latest gadgets(read Pixel), I'd been for G onsite, i was not even allowed to explore the office and was handed out a L3 down levelled offer. Are they SWEs? No. 😩
Yeah but they don’t get contracts worth more than a mid-level SWE lol Does “talking about developer advocacy” when you’re barely a developer contribute anything to a business’s bottom line? I’m baffled how a company can be okay to throw this much money on reels that don’t even get 5k views, but are totally okay to lay off 20% of engineering workforce the moment the stock takes a dip. And people find this to be a reasonable arrangement
Not his fault that most technical people are abysmal on camera
Look up “A Life Engineered” on YouTube. Dude is a Principal Engineer at Amazon with actual accomplishments in engineering, plus a top tier YT channel to boot. If anyone should be in charge of “developer advocacy” it’s someone like that, someone who’s fought and won the battles. Not some random dude who was a web dev once
Ermmmmm wouldn't call that a "top tier YouTube channel" lmao. In any case, most people in general aren't good on camera, and the typical engineer is even worse than that. Why do you think it's necessary for someone to be a distinguished expert in order to make instructional videos?
dev rel teams love hiring former and current devs. go get your bag if you think you deserve it, but don’t bag on somebody else for earning more.
I’m not bagging on him, I’m bagging on the companies that spend huge amount to basically hire a tiktoker, and then wonder where all the money goes during down periods and starts talking about layoffs. I’ve seen friends of mine get fired, smart folks. But some dude can TALK about coding without actually doing it for a living, and his job is important enough to keep? Joke
Once you also get laid off in the coming months, maybe you can apply for his role for better job security then 😄
Do it then You seem like you have the charisma to nail it. Would be easy for a guy like you. Update with your offers
ROFL if you think this is about “charisma” Watch a ton of these “DevRel” talks and not an ounce of charisma to be found in any of these glorified tiktokers Wouldn’t expect someone working for Meta to be able to understand though, your platform thrives off cheap content
Most dev advocates are URMs.
White people only or URMs Everybody knows America and the West hates Asian men for media roles Well for everything tbh but especially media roles
You're slogging because you chose a tech guy career. Did you think people in other professions don't make serious money ?
This is a deflection. No shit other jobs make money. But most of them have to eat some shit too. Lawyers, doctors, etc Since when do you get paid a mid-senior SWE salary for posting about “developer advocacy”? And people are shocked when these companies find out they are over-hired 🤣
It just depends on how smartly you're able to monetize whatever you're doing in this world. I mean there are people making serious money off of Tiktok dances and YouTube channels and OnlyFans accounts, using whatever skills they have
