My company has unlimited PTOs and looks like my team lead is misusing it by either being sick, medical appointments, sick kid or being on a vacation almost 2-3 days every week. This has been happening since 2-3 months. In the rare event of him coming to meetings, he is not updated on what’s going on in the team and confuses everybody by bringing in new ideas in the middle of a sprint and is causing a lot of re-work and frustration. Meanwhile my manager thinks highly of him and is not aware about all the PTO stuff going on (mainly because my team lead and I have different managers). All the meetings are scheduled/cancelled based on the lead’s availability. Should I bring this to my manager’s attention? ——UPDATE—— Thank you for all the different perspectives! I have decided to not be a snitch, mind my own business, document why something didn’t get completed due to all the TL PTOs and use it for my own protection when the time comes. ———UPDATE 2 ——— 3 team members collectively scheduled a meeting and raised this and their manager. I was asked for my views and I corroborated with the team. Action has been taken, don’t know what it is though! But I can already see reduction in the PTOs TC: 185K #officelife #workplace #culture #swe
Quiet quitting
I mean if they are doing their job who cares honestly. I think the biggest issue is OP has really explained if the person is still getting their work done or not, only that they are out of the loop on mid-sprint ideas.
and whats leads job? To be on top of whats going on and help, rarher then make everyone redo their stuff... I would report that further up, of course depending on company size small company report, fang size, just ignore, in between, depending on how much i care to stay in team/company
No. Let your manager deal with it and worry about yourself. Their poor work performance will catch up with them eventually.
Why would you not want to raise this?
Nobody likes a snitch
It had nothing to do with them. It’s company policy
Sorry - you think that because someone has discovered that people in your company can take pto twice a week that the correct response is to complain about it instead of also take pto twice a week yourself?
Haha I don’t know how he does it! There will be fire burning all around if I take that many PTOs
Let it burn.
Yes, you should, especially since you and he have different managers. However, I would frame it in a certain way. It is possible that this person is dealing with some sort of personal crisis that involves his or his child’s health. Speak to your manager about the deleterious effects it is having on the team (basically what you said in your second paragraph) instead of implying that he is doing something wrong or taking advantage (which he very well may be, but you do not know for sure).
To be fair though, there’s no wrongdoing here Company says they offer “unlimited pto”, employee takes literally unlimited pto. It would be wrong if company has 3-4 weeks pto and someone takes 5-6 weeks off At best, its just “malicious compliance of the company policy”
So, in your view, if someone literally stopped coming to work completely and claimed they were using their unlimited PTO, that wouldn’t be unethical and obviously unworkable?
You never know what’s going on in his life. You should let the managers handle this as they are in better position to judge.

I like this point!
If they’re really having health problems in their family I’d let it go. That could be you someday. If it’s mostly vacation I’d bring it up though.
Agreed. With back to back sickness in children, sometimes we have to flex as needed. I agree that his bringing in new ideas and confusing the team is not acceptable. But taking time off to care for a period of difficult times in his family deserves some empathy. But who knows? Dude could be interviewing on the side. Though no one decent should be making up sick kids stories for that. Or if it continues for more than a couple of months, then maybe he should consider FMLA.
Dude is probably interviewing
