Holy shit! This documentary on Netflix changed a lot of perspectives for me. Now, I view the things differently. They talk about how Facebook, Google, Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit and other social networking sites are affecting human behavior. Almost all the things they talk about is true. Honestly, Facebook and Google was designed to make world a better place but unfortunately, we are in those times where we need to control the way it works. Do you think we need to regulate companies who store user data? Why/why not? Edit: A snowflake in comment is complaining about some companies being left out unintentionally. These are the social media companies the documentary talk about. Facebook Google Twitter Snapchat Reddit LinkedIn Pinterest
What about Instagram? I know it is under Facebook but they talk a lot about them. I support regulation but you should see how fb is violating/misusing policies like CCPA.
In terms of privacy, I think there needs to be some regulation (e.g. their right to be forgotten), but that's about it. People simply need to learn how to conduct themselves in an online setting. It's not much different than how you would carry yourself in, say, a professional environment. Speaking more broadly, the internet has always been a shitty place filled with hate, bias, and fake news. How is social media any different?
Social media is how hate, bias, and fake news spread quickest to the largest audience.
Social media has created huge divides in the world politically. Trump supporters vs Biden supporters have moved so far apart that they cant even see the middle anymore. This is due to fake news and social media filling news feeds with things that make us upset.
Coming from that perspective, is blind doing the same?
I found the show boring
This
Just same old story. That documentary is indeed boring. If u r so much interested in ur data then simply dont use those platforms.
It's not simply about "data" but rather the unconscious control these algorithms have on us and how they are designed to maximize engagement due to these companies' business models. Did you even watch it, or are you just assuming what the documentary is about?
He clearly didn’t watch the show. It’s not just about data.
It's not anything new or surprising. Social media is designed to make money from your personal information! No way! I'd imagine everyone here would already be well aware of this fact. Ultimately it's personal responsibility. These companies aren't doing anything wrong or worse than other companies inherently. It's just capitalism. I don't support regulation of the internet period because regulation for internet companies leads to regulation of free speech and much worse implications.
The most boring doc about the most boring topic. Everyone understands that. Is the people asking for regulation also wanting regulation for the internet as a whole? Seems a superficial and grandma approach
Yeah but it teaches them that regulation is the only way, which is the old way.
You didn't know about this?
I don't think a lot of people understand all the hacks they talked about. I love the way they explained about ML models using a real human model so regular non-tech people can understand.
I think the person interviewed was from Pinterest. Why do you conveniently leave that name? Are you a pin employee?
I said other social networking sites. Are you blind? Don't you see the company next to my username?
I liked your post as something interesting but seeing your reply to wokenbroke’s comment, I am starting to have my doubts. People change companies all the time and can still log into blind using their old IDs. This is well known so his question stands. This makes me doubt your understanding of the documentary. The documentary might still be good though but you are definitely not helping it.
