Why are people idiots who consider a home an investment?

Citibank Slurpsurp OP Aug 11, 2018

Thought it would be a safer alternative for those that can’t admit they may have purchased at the peak. Generally speaking not a good investment alternative to equities long term. Lots of info online

Because if it appreciates at 2x of mortgage rates (Seattle, Kirkland, Bellevue), when the time comes to sell you get all your money back and optionally a good pile on top, which means you lived for free all those years in a SFH.

OP clearly is against home ownership and doesn’t understand how it works 🤦‍♂️

Your reading comprehension skills are concerning. I wouldn’t recommend homeownership as an investment. Perhaps you have a point you’d like to make? Please enlighten me.

I don't know anyone who considers owning an investment. They just would rather not throw money down the drain. It's not like if you rent you magically have all this extra money that you can invest in stocks, you still have to pay your rent. If you pay the same amount that you were renting for into a house then at least you have something in your pocket when you move. I "lost money" on my first house that I only had for 3 years but I still had more equity than I started with and a place to live for 3 years @ $1300 a month. If you've found a way to live in a place without paying rent though I'm all ears.
