edit: For software engineers, forgot to clarify TC $115k / YOE: 1.5 I have an offer from Amazon TC: $215k. I had an interview but got it because I was messaged by a recruiter on LinkedIn (which doesnt really happen much to me !!) I didn’t really think about even switching to a big tech company until I had this opportunity, and I want to at least try my hand at getting opportunities at other places as well. This week I applied to a few of the FANG type companies where I knew friends from college through referral but no one has reached out from any of them yet. I think maybe my resume is not written well, and I don’t know how to use LinkedIn the most effectively (like can you just cold message/inMail recruiters??) Or perhaps for my level there is a bit of a hiring chill and beggars arent choosers? Does anyone have some noob advice for me or could point me to any resources where I can try to learn best practices for being effective 🥺
What’s the role
Edited description. I am in a bubble and didn’t even think to specify software engineer. but any general advice is good too
Why do u need to update resume if u have offer for 215k that too from amazon Bit confused
just because i don’t think it played a role in me getting into the interview loop for amazon. a recruiter messaged me on linkedin, set me up with an informational call with the engineering manager and then i went into an on-site loop. I’m just wondering how i would approach if i wanted to apply to companies without someone reaching out to me because that doesn’t really happen to me on linkedin
It will happen once you have Amazon in LinkedIn if you decide to take it
Every job interview and offer that I’ve had came through LinkedIn. I pay for the premium service.
ok that’s good to know, thank you!
Same, my last three jobs were all through LinkedIn.
Some more passive things to do: If you're open to recruiters contacting you, there is a setting to check that makes you searchable to them. The summary section has a fairly large character limit. List your product knowledge, languages and years of experience, verticals you've worked in, etc. Don't make it bland, make it legible and keyword-searchable. Ask for written recommendations from contacts.
Awesome, thank you for that I think I could definitely improve my summary section and I don’t have a single recommendation either
As someone who works in recruiting, this is absolutely the best thing to do. Recruiters are spending less than 15 seconds reviewing your profile. If there are bullet points summarizing the following items, I am reaching out to you: - YoE (not including internships) - languages you know well - architecture experience - mentorship/leadership experience - link to GitHub, personal website, apps you've built This information separates you from 95% of software engineers and makes you an attractive candidate to reach out to.
OP do you have a portfolio or GitHub linked to your LinkedIn, or just your education and experience listed? I'm really surprised an Amazon recruiter reached out to you with 1.5 YOE. You're from America correct? What do you think made them reach out and get you straight into an onsite loop? If you don't have a good CV or are a noob at LinkedIn I'm surprised hence my initial questions.. Congratulations though :)
I have a portfolio/GitHub — nothing super special I don’t feel like, but I have made a LOT of Alexa skills just for fun but also in a professional context. And this is for an Alexa, and one of the preferred items was “experience building Alexa skills.” I almost feel like someone found my repo which had a link to my LinkedIn profile, I just today got it to the “all star” level or whatever it is so I don’t think I was even showing up in recruiter searches. I also don’t know how common it is to have an informational call with the engineering manager before you interview especially at this YOE? Maybe also that I interned at Palantir one summer they asked about that. but like I’m pretty sure this was just good fortune of someone finding me, I wanted to ask here to see how I am actually supposed to set myself up to be found :D And yes, US born and raised but I am brown (south asian), I literally don’t have a reason for this but I think the combo of those two helped? Lol
Bingo, your Alexa skill has catched someone's eyes.
I paid a company (resume to interviews) about 8 years ago to redo mine and couldn’t have been happier. I still use it and every interview someone comments on how much they like the flow of my resume. Not a shill and I don’t work for them, just passing along info. I think it was $99 at the time
Another tip! Dont join amazon
This. Don't.
Reasoning?
Go to experts like topresume
Does this actually help?
No need to get premium or do anything special. Just keep your LinkedIn updated with your title, work experience, and tech stack. Recruiters will swarm like flies just after having an year of Amazon on your profile.

Harsh, but true.
