#finance #career #new york I just got an offer as a quant researcher from two sigma in one of the portfolio management teams. I had no prior experience in finance and have little knowledge on how the career development looks like. Could you share some insight on 1) how does a typical career trajectory look like starting from here? 2) is it easy to jump to other companies as experienced hire? 3) any comment on the perspective of this position? Thank you so much for any input! Base salary : 220k
Quite likely blinders will ask for TC before anything 😂 1) Not a long ladder like big tech. Your bonus grows as you produce outputs and profits and as you move closer to alpha and pnl. Will have to lead and mentor at some point just like big tech, but pnl plays a bigger part in the bonus. 2) no, check non-compete. Unlike pod shops, 2s is a place where it is harder to see through the whole system. A common saying is that a senior quant from places like 2s is less likely to be able to create a trading system from scratch. 3) you have one life and a few years to try out. Why not?
Thank you so much for the input!!! By 2) I mean if working at the portfolio team is a preferable prior work experience compared with alpha research/building strategy. (I have this question as I thought maybe alpha research is of higher demand in job market?
You can likely do alpha research as well if interested
What was your offer? Feel free to DM me. 1) Hard to move into management, but bonuses will grow accordingly with pnl. Many QR here reach $1mm within 6 years. 2) Possible, but you’ll definitely have to wait 1-2 years on non-compete 3) It’s a great position at a great company. Folks are collaborative, friendly, and a big focus on learning.
Never heard of anyone here getting a 2 year noncompete?
