What do folks who work at Snowflake (core teams only) feel about: 1. The work culture? 2. Reviews every quarter? 3. Work life balance? 4. Downward trend of the stock and poor guidance? 5. Are the salaries reported on levels.fyi inflated? I am a DB internals expert with 12+ yoe. I have been frequently pinged by SNOW management for possible opportunities. The financial aspects do look quite bright (acc to levels.fyi), hoping that I get Principal SWE offer. So I am considering the switch. Is it a good place to work at? Howâs the health insurance? (I would hate to leave the premium health coverage offered at Oracle). Thanks! TC: 450K #snowflake #snowflakecomputing #oracle
As IC3 I make more than 450. Youâre aiming for IC5. If you get an IC5 offer, the answer to above questions wonât matter. Youâll join us.
So the salaries posted on levels.fyi are indeed real.
The salaries are real. The salary to bullshit ratio at Snowflake is rather high, compared to other teams.
Principal (IC5) with 12+ yoe is a tough sell but in the rare event that you crack it, the money will erase all those worries away. Healthcare benefit is shit here but when youâre earning that much, it probably wonât matter then
How shit are they? I mean what do they lack? Or you just pay more every month than usual?
Op get an offer first!
2. They have stack ranking perf review every quarter. The bottom 10-20% needs to get the "don't meet expectations" rank. Two such grades in a row, and you are fired. They keep firing at a fast pace and keep other engineers busy with recruiting, so they can't focus on their assignments and will be eventually fired as well. This is what I heard from the employee and the office was not in the US. But I guess it might be similar here.
I have heard kinda similar in US. They stack rank and silently fire many ppl. No warnings, straightaway fire.
Are you both talking about the core teams?
Donât worry about the money; uncle Snow will take care of you. Levels.fyi is accurate. > Work life balance. Please donât apply if you expect Snowflake to figure this out for you. Weâre not google or Msft. Core SQL teams are high performing, relatively little bullshit there. > Downward trend of the stock and poor guidance? Youâd be coming it wt the bottom
This seems intense. From what others have mentioned, if a person is going through a rough patch for 6 months, he is fired! đŽ
Itâs not for everyone. I know of at least four people in my immediate team that got a axed or are/were in the process in the last 2 and a half years. Our team isnât that big, hovering around 9 people. But hey, if you want w/l balance thereâs always IBM or something. And youâll get paid accordingly.
1. Work culture is intense, your hours will vary but there is no slack anywhere and the pressure is the highest at any company I have ever been. 2. Yes, quarterly reviews. Different org have different level of rigor but pros/eng is pretty standardized. I think youâre fired after one DNM or two MME. Itâs part of the relentlessly performing culture here. Other orgs (finance, sales, etc.) are similar but their firing rate varies. 3. lol donât come here if that is what youâre looking for. 4. #4 and #5 is related. Guidance is hyper conservative and Mike said so on our earnings call. Lots of new innovation GA this year but consumption (and revenue) always lags behind. Are there other problems? Probably, every company have problems everywhere. Snowflake has some major structural cost problems: 1) AI is crazy expensive. 2) we pay our prod/eng people insane $$$ and it massively impacts our stock dilution. 5. Yes they are correct. Snow pays top dollar in prod/eng, at the expense of every other functions in the company. Itâs a big reason why our stock dilution is so bad and puts downward pressure on stock every quarter now that interest rate is not zero.
Thank you for the honest and in depth overview
Thanks mate for such a wholesome answer! Appreciate it! Given the high firing rate, have you seen âhiring for firingâ kinda scenario?
1. What is WLB compared to Meta and Amazon? 2. What is the firing rate compared to Meta and Amazon?

450 after stock appreciation? Honestly I donât see a ton of people who are happy here especially in OCI. Maybe db org is better
