Stanford costs 80k more and will take an extra year to complete. Asking for a friend, and he mainly just wants a school that will allow him to get interviews at tech companies since he didn’t go to a good undergrad. #swe #software #engineering
UIUC is a ridiculously good school. No need to pay that extra 80k and spend extra year. I feel like this extra year might be making the cost higher. is it a thesis at Stanford but not so at UIUC? Go to Stanford if you want to say you went there or looking to also do PhD or getting network of folks looking to create startups. Everything else - UIUC is fine
Yanka Reddi Gudem University
He’s not getting interviews because the economy is trash. No master’s degree will change that for him.
He graduated 2 years ago and has been working at a no name company and applying everywhere. Couldn’t get any interviews even when the market was good. Undergrad was outside the top 100 cs programs, so he thinks that was a large factor
I think his assessment is fundamentally wrong. It’s the job market plus his low YOE more than his school brand name.
School Name doesn’t matter. Came from a small liberal arts college and like nearly 50% in my class was able to either land a faang job or get an interview by senior year
inb4 the small liberal arts college is harvey mudd or amherst lmao
I did my undergrad at a top 10 CS school, similar to UIUC (think GaTech/UT Austin/UW) and took CS grad courses at Stanford. I must admit that the education quality that Stanford offers far exceeded what I had in my undergrad. Rigorous coursework, up-to-date information, super knowledgable professors & TAs, peers are much better. Basically lots of private university perks that one would have to fight for at public schools. People are more interested & impressed in interviews once I said I took Stanford courses. I wouldn’t say do it for the brand name, but if money and time allow, I would highly recommend Stanford.
Did you complete grad courses only, or did you fully enroll to their masters in cs program?
I took grad courses only
I’d say that school name does matter. However, the difference is negligible here. UIUC might even be the better school for tech.
Have you heard of people with no degree having a good job? Besides, at least for Stanford, it's not easy to get accepted even when you are paying the high tuition.
Dude, if you’re American then none of that matters. Especially if all you want is to get into a top tech company. Just spam people working in top companies on LinkedIn/Blind and ask for referrals to get that interview opportunity. Of course, you’ll be rejected in a lot of places but you literally only need to get a few callbacks. After that, all that matters is Leetcode. The economic value of a Masters degree in CS is purely for international students who are trying to come into the country and build a new life here.
How did your friend get into Stanford if he can't get a job offer, their bar is incredibly high?

I told my friend that, but he’s worried it doesn’t carry much weight on resume due to low bar to entry (high acceptance rate)
Your friend really believes a degree is what will get him in?
