Is "From the River to the Sea" So Wrong?
Asking for a friend. She has 4.5 YOE. Current TC: 290k Both for senior (L5 and L5a). For some reason google didn’t match uber’s offer: Uber 196k base, 35k bonus, 715k RSU. Average TC: 410k, due to front load(35/30/20/15), first year TC: 481k, second year TC: 445k, last 2 years: 374k, 338k Google 197k base, 15% bonus, 542k RSU, sign on: 30k. Average TC 362k, due to front load(33/33/22/12), first year is around 435k(including 30k sign on), second year TC: 405k, last 2 years: 346k, 292k Google said this is the max they can offer… don’t know how to negotiate higher. Advice appreciated! She also needs to apply for green card immediately(perm), so processing speed is important. Confirmed that both Uber and Google can start at day1. What do you think? Would love to hear from people working at either. Thanks!
Quite high numbers for 4.5 yoe, do they have PhD? I would go to google for perm stability, not much TC difference.
Agree. 160k diff over 4 years. Google stock might appreciate more than Uber and cover it handsomely.
Not PHD, only master. Agree with stability!
Op how did you get l5a and l5 at googl with 4.5 yoe. Just wow. Congrats.. What's the secret??? Do share with us please 🙏😊
Thanks! To more easily get the senior level interview, getting senior level in current company helps a lot. Also current company must be well known, so they can acknowledge it. To pass the interview, for google interview, needs some luck :P Generally, prepare and practice coding questions for almost all categories of questions(e.g. DFS, BFS, graph, etc). For system design, read and understand high level of design data intensive application book, also learn Grokking the System Design Interview, other random things like online resources/YouTube videos, eng blogs. Hope it helps!
Thank you so much for this information and good luck 👍
L5 Google with 4.5 yoe seems crazy. Can you give more info? That is, I think, literally the lowest yoe for goog l5 ever
I know some people with even 3.5 or 4/5 yoe get google l5 too. Not impossible, but I agree getting the L5 interview is difficult, and passing the interview also needs some luck
Yeah I have some friends who made it to Google senior in 4 years with just bachelor's degree. But they got internally promoted, might be more difficult for lateral hires. And I am here trying badly for a l4 position at Google. @OP was your friend asked hard dp problems? I at suck it so badly and have an onsite coming.
Lol, why do companies front load, such a shitty idea. Encouraging people to Leave or not work?
Yeah. I think maybe they’re confident that the stock value will increase by the time you get to yrs 3 and 4, or that the refreshers will stack?
Refreshers to smooth it out for years 3/4. By front loading if there is stock appreciation they can give you less rsu units to make your tc whole for those years.
Current location and company?
Bay Area. Sorry, I am not sure if my friend wants to share the company.
Does Uber offer refreshers? Google refresher target is ~100k for L5 and they stack. Also at Google, like 93% of people get higher than target bonus, usually about 10% higher I think, so that's an extra 20k. Depending on how Uber does refreshers, even without a difference in stock growth Google might come out ahead TC wise. It definitely would for Amazon. And the fact that they want GC makes me think G is a.much safer choice. Much less likely for layoff/pip.
Uber also has refreshers which stack and have multipliers for bonus.. My roommate got ~120k as L5a
Uber stock refreshers and cash bonus are the best in market from what I have learnt. They beat Facebook and Google. 120k stock refresher and 35k performance cash bonus.
congrats OP. What’s her current company name?
Thanks! But sorry, I am not sure if my friend wants to share the company.
Both are great opportunities. I say choose the role with the work that interests her most. If they're both similar I'd go with Uber, but there's really not a bad option here.
Given that the OP’s friend got L5 at 4.5 years of experience, I think Uber is better choice since they look to be career growth oriented. Way more opportunities to get promoted and climb the ladder at Uber than Google. Google/Amazon/Microsoft all feel tenure+ performance based when it comes to promotions. Uber/Facebook is more performance and impact driven, so career growth is completely in the hands of the employee
4.5 YoE and L5 at google ?
Yes, very lucky
