My girlfriend's recruiter from VMware said that they are planning to open the Palo Alto campus for in person from September this year. Also said that she might want to move to bay area before that to avoid any reduced pay. Any idea how much percentage they are going to reduce if they work from a different place other than California? #tech #wfh #vmware #vmwaresalary #covid19
Our plan to reopen the office has moved several times. Don’t believe September 2021. By September 2021 we will be in the midst of another wave.
Plan has moved several times for reopening of offices- there’s no news of reopening in Sept at this time, only that we will be WFH until at least September. Zones: 0: Bay Area- 0% lower (baseline) 1: CA LA, Orange County, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Napa/Sonoma; CT, DC, NJ, NYC (doesn't indicate if Long Island, Westchester, etc count but I imagine yes if CT and NJ do), Seattle- 8% lower 2: All CA not listed above (eg Sacramento); Delaware, IL, MA, Maryland (outside DC area, so NOT Montgomery, Frederick, Prince George), MI, NH, NC, OR, PA, RI, TX (Austin, Dallas, Houston metros only), WA (outside Seattle metro)- 13% lower 3: AZ, CO, FL, GA, HI, MN, MO, NV, OH, WI, NY (all outside NYC metro), TX (all outside big three metros), VA (all outside NOVA, eg Richmond, Tidewater)- 18% lower 4: All else- 25% lower
Thank you for the great reply. Is the reduction applied to base salary only? Or is it for the TC? (Base, joining bonus, performance bonus, stocks, etc)
Zone-based correction on Base salary. Performance bonus is % of base, so the impact would be on both base and bonus. Joining bonus & RSU are location agnostic depends on the deal you strike
VMware follows county's public health guidelines. We'll only open when the county allows non-essential business to reopen and will not open at full capacity at once. Based on how slow Santa Clara County moves to vaccinate, it's nearly impossible to reopen non-essential business by end of this year.
Also our manager said that 1st April is the day which will be used for considering the location for the yearly salary revision. That means you have to update work location before April 1, to consider your salary evaluation based on the location
Can you change work location after an year?
Within the same country yes. But subject to pay adjustment and need approval all the way from your manager to HR. There isn't a set time threshold for relocation but it's discouraged to relocate frequently (no official definition of frequency).

What do you think is wrong with a kid who got rejected by 9 colleges?
There’s different zones. Seattle is in zone 2 (assuming you’re in Seattle because Amazon) so it would be an 8 percent decrease in base salary
Considering the fact that Washington has no income tax isn’t that an increase in salary? 13.3% - 8% = 5.3% increase Who wouldn’t take that ?!
@VMware, do you have numbers for other places as well, please? Such as Texas, Florida, etc?
