As we have a lot of people from Apple, Amazon, Netflix and so on here, let me share a very stupid, consumer focused idea with you. This idea is probably not new and many people wished for it... A service that acts as a flexible payment provider for all participating streaming services. The way it works is, when you sign up for Netflix for example, you get their usual plans or an option that says "Combine with other Services like ...". If you do that, you not only create a Netflix account, but also a ServiceX account that is connected to Netflix. You can oauth with other participating platforms and the catch is payment. The service will get reports about your watch history from all providers. At the end of month it will take the cost of your package at provider X and divide it by the time you spent there compared to other providers. It does that for all providers and gives you an invoice across all services based on usage (and maybe some base fee). Why would we do this you ask? At least from my friends I know a lot of people that a) share accounts, b) quit services to get others or don't get a service because they already have another one. With a service like this, there is no reason not to consume your platform as well. The (financial) bar of entry is much lower which I think would win against the money you make from unused subs. In addition consumers get a better experience and don't have to worry about where they can watch stuff anymore, so you might draw even more people from classical TV or increase usage. And one more idea would be, that providers can opt to share the watch history generated for a user with them with other providers. This way everybody gets to share data on trends in a simple way which benefits the industry as it can be used to make decisions on productions etc. You'd also save money on marketing, as it's much easier to get to your content without much additional work. This sounds a little like a mix of what the new Google TV or services like JustWatch already do but with the subscription collaboration. Also this would work internationally. Compared to the amount of stuff we people outside the US don't get, this idea does not care about content directly, just about APIs and metrics kind of. As a consumer frequently frustrated with selection and the amount of new services, I'd love to have something like this. As an engineer, It doesn't sound hard to build (no worries, not gonna Startup on this, no time, I like being employed). What do you think, can the big players get behind something like this, what are your concerns? Do you think competition and mutual hatred is still to big for this? Can't add more companies, sadly. #streaming #apple #amazon #netflix #disney #hulu #hbo
