https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/4/22491629/apple-employees-push-back-return-office-internal-letter-tim-cook The “give me my full remote or I quit” stance is unbelievably cringe and ripe with entitlement. Not only are tech jobs compensated at the top 1% of the world, but now tech employees also demand to be able to fully WFH so they can squeeze in a Kundalini meditation sesh between zoom calls and frolic around their brownstones and San Mateo mini mansions with no pants on. Apple employees are trying to virtue signal that this has to do with “diversity and inclusion”, hilarious. Will Apple store employees be able to WFH? How about all of the “essential workers” or your DoorDash drivers? Pushing for full WFH is going to blow up in your face when companies realize if they aren’t going to be adding value in person, you can save a lot of money hiring someone directly in India or Brazil, where they actually work hard compared to entitled Americans. And for way less. Don’t believe me? Look around at the startups who are doing full remote with just the founders co-located and everyone contracted around the world with no benefits (cause unlike in America, their gov pays for healthcare). Annoying to organize you say? Look up what a PEO is. GG

I might actually want to work at Apple if they allowed remote. Why should employees who can do their job from anywhere have to commute 2 hours a day just to be forced into awkward social interactions
They are only awkward social interactions to awkward people
Apple is big on secrecy even refusing to share information between two teams working on same product. It’s obvious why they want employees back on their super secret secure campus in the middle of the woods
The point is if teams can establish they're just as effective (or more so) being remote, the argument for being in the office doesn't hold as much water for them. If this leads to more outsourcing - so be it. There is no free lunch here.
It's a business transaction. It's capitalism. You should calm down
As is replacing your job with someone from China. Why hire an expensive engineer remotely in Santa Monica when you can get some 996 Chinese to do it? Blizzard has already started doing this btw, Diablo Immortal is completely built by NetEase in China. 5 engineers there is cheaper than one here, and they work faster and don’t ask questions or complain about gameplay.
You are talking as if this isn't the norm. Businesses tend to do what's best for the shareholders and employees should do what's best for them.
If you want to be remote , Might as well outsource to India ,way cheaper and hard working.
Most large tech companies already do this and have large offices in India so not sure what you're on about. If you want to attract the best talent you need to pay top dollar no matter the location.
Not all could, until now. A few Fortune 500 companies doing it vs now is very different.
If more money, more equity, shares, RSU are part of the equation when choosing where you work. Why wouldn't remote work be? Sure employees can't force it but they can take that into account when looking for opportunities. The same way some would choose a company over another depending on where its office is located.
They're pissed! So pissed that... they're still working there?
What’s cringing is you forming such strong opinion of all employees of a company based on a letter
I’m reacting to the group who created that letter, not all. But let’s be honest, they’re loud and very influential. What is your stance?
This is a vocal group, though I wouldn’t go as far as calling them loud and influential. Remote work to me is not perfect and has its pros and cons vs in-office, I like this initial approach by execs
It’s possible I missed the detail, but it doesn’t sound like a threat or ultimatum. Just sounds like they’re asking for the ability to remain fully remote. Although I agree the “Diversity and Inclusion” argument is a bit weird in this context, but whatever!
I was just reading something about how Black employees did better during WFH (comparatively speaking I’m assuming) because they didn’t have to code switch as much being at home. While maybe not the definition most people think of it does allow companies to hire those who can’t relocate due to family (especially in caregiver situations)
People act like remote work hasn’t been a thing for a decade at a lot of companies. Or, at least a hybrid model. People just want more flexibility. And now there’s more choice to do that. Tech folks are entitled. Largely the engineers. See it every day here and in life. Why is this different?
I mean... I get that I'm paid well, but if I want to WFH forever, why shouldn't I switch to a company that accommodates that?
Go for it. But if the value you add is the same remote as it is in person, it can be contracted. You aren’t mentoring anyone, or creating anything new. You’re just doing tasks ideated and scheduled by someone else.
I disagree, but I doubt I'll convince you. Genuinely wish you the best in the office!
