Walmart Rant - PTOs in Bentonville

I have been working with Walmart for a few years. One particular area where I absolutely hate the company policy is regarding PTOs. From my knowledge, a new employee here in Bentonville get only 21 PTOs. Now, this 21 includes all kinds of holidays(from casual, sick leaves, public/national holidays even Christmas). The company says you can use these PTOs as you wish if you dont want a break on Christmas, thats fine, it is upto you to take it. I like the flexibility, but only 21 PTOs?? The industry standard is anywhere from 26-35/ per year. I believe this is exploitation at its best. They want us to work 45hr/ week at least and then will offer only 21 PTOs. When I exit the company, this would be one of the reason. It might sound silly to some but definitely not me. We live in middle of nowhere and there's nothing to do here. Even for a small vacation you'll need to fly somewhere else from this soul-sucking city. What t discuss this with other folks. How to ask my manager for more PTOs when the company policy doesn't allow this. #walmart #pto #ptos #workplace #officelife #culture #techlabor

If you don’t like the PTO why not just leave? You can’t ask for more PTO wtf lmao how special do you think you are here??? Company policy is set. Manager could get in big trouble if they let you get more PTO without approval. Leave if you don’t like it.

Thanks for the motivation sir. There are visa complications that I need to clear out before I plan to leave. Till then, stuck here. Meanwhile could tell me how much holidays in total you get?

You mean they give no holidays in addition to the 21 days PTO? I find that hard to believe. Assuming you get actual Xmas day off, Thanksgiving, New Years Day, etc... then 21 days for an employee < 4-5 days of tenure is industry standard.

Walmart YDsE08 Mar 10, 2021

There are no holidays. You only get Xmas, Thanksgiving, etc. off if you use a PTO day otherwise you are expected to work thos holidays.

Walmart Mr.Doritos OP Mar 10, 2021

I know it is hard to believe, even after working here for 2+ years

At my first job we had 7 PTO the first year, up to a max of 20. Dunno where you got “industry standard” from, but 2 weeks (10-14 days) is the most common policy.

Boeing muskyElon Mar 10, 2021

I think he means including holidays(10 holidays) and vacation time (10 days) plus sick time (5 days)

Walmart Mr.Doritos OP Mar 10, 2021

@muskyElon thanks for the clarification. I think I have mentioned this is the post, but for clarity I'll clear it out again, the PTOs include all find of holidays you can take from work

Only submit/use PTO days for trips. Take half days or wfh or 1 day here and there without submitting pto. I’ve worked this out with many mgrs who do the same when limited by number of days. As long as you get your work done most people don’t care.

Although I hate the PTO policy. Only 21 PTOs per year is inaccurate. Number of PTO' allocated depends on yoe with walmart.

Walmart Mr.Doritos OP Mar 10, 2021

I am referring to new employees, which would categorize them in 0-2 yoe and thus 21 PTOs. Anyways thanks for adding more details here

Sorry, I missed the new employee part in your post.

Walmart racewithme Mar 10, 2021

Yoe. PTO 1. 21 2 to 3. 23 3 to 5. 26 6 to 9. 31 10 to 14. 34 15plus. 36

Amazon quantish Mar 18, 2021

Is that yoe at the company or overall? And if overall is it literally years since you graduated or a rough mapping to internal levels?

Walmart Mr.Doritos OP Mar 18, 2021

Years with walmart

Walmart Ajs129 Mar 10, 2021

The OP is correct but on the flip side there is no serious tracking of the PTO usage. From what we see, short break was not really accounted for. If your pain point is about 5 more pto days, I think you can manage it.

Walmart triggerme Mar 10, 2021

Dang, it is unlimited in SV here, but 21! I don't think I'm taking so many a year as it is 🙄

Walmart shopKeeper Mar 10, 2021

Don't need a written approval. PTO tracker is for self tracking. No one monitors it. You got a couple of days there. I can trade the flexibility for a couple of total days off other employers provide (PTO+sick+holidays) With that assumption, the 21 feels like 25 and with some tenure, it isn't a problem. I had not thought about the additional flying time and expensive flights from Bentonville because I have never been there. And I started with 26 instead of 21. So I feel you OP

It depends on the manager as well. Mine doesn't micromanage and while I do have 30+ at this point, never really worry as if I need more, my manager would let me without paper work, as it will come back sometime later (working a weekend maybe, or just late hours, all self-managed), or maybe not at all. Even on years I have taken a lot off, I haven't found myself exceeding my max. The only time I went over was with a micromanager because I was being overworked and really needed a mental health day or two. They gave me some comp time to supplement that. YMMV
