Web solutions engineer at Google?

Recently failed HC at g as a swe. I don't think it's been 6 months, but somehow getting contacted. What's a web solutions engineer? They're saying it's swe plus BI stuff? Currently contracting as a senior/lead swe at another fang and have great relationship with my manager. Is it worth the switch? I do want to move out of the technical role in the next 5 years

Are you still with we?

I am a WSE. WSE is more like SWE with PM not BI. WSE meets with clients and stakeholders directly to bring a technical solution to their problems quickly. In terms of what they do, WSE develops web apps most of the time and their time is more than 90% coding (might depend on the team). WSE projects are almost always web based. SWE projects can be web but it could be anything as well like network, hardware, etc. For pay, WSE gets a little less than SWE and if you want to switch to SWE later, you might need to go through some set of interviews again so more leetcoding might come later :)

Just curious, is this a GCP role, or are there WSEs in every org?

I am not sure if every org but I am not in gcp

Pay is 20-30% lower than SWE, maybe more. You can interview for SWE role after a year, but you need to find a supportive team and the process is about as difficult as an external SWE hire. Role is a lot more limited than SWE, harder to change teams and unofficially there’s a level ceiling (likely won’t go above L5).

Interesting, do other companies differentiate between a swe and wse? If I ended up leaving? Also how different is the work? The other person said I'd be working on web apps, but that's my background, could I do that as a swe?

They do. Non SWE roles aren’t as well regarded. However, the work likely isn’t that different. The main thing you notice is that SWEs at Google get a ton of respect at Google and at similar tier companies.
