We recently hired a new junior on our team. Was having a casual convo with her last week and she let me know she was flying to Miami this weekend (today) but she was going to take a half day. Long Story short, she didn’t take a half day and claimed her “internet has been down” the entire afternoon, not really a problem most weeks but since we’re at the end of our Sprint at the EOQ it’s a pain in my ass since I’ve had to pick up some meetings & work at the last minute that she would’ve normally handled or would’ve been accounted for prior to this afternoon. I think ima let it slide this time but what would you do?
So let me get this straight, she’s out getting D in Miami while you are covering for her? She will prob pull this in the future. No internet that’s a good one
Why isn't there a vote option to cover for her and make her owe you one?
Not a bad idea, but that’s not really my style! Something about pushing my work onto other team members just never sat well with me.
You guys are operating in a way where one newly hired junior person missing for one day is causing that big an issue?
The work/meetings aren’t super difficult/complex, just time consuming.
Don't do someone else's work unless they have specifically asked for a favor. If they signed up for a task it is their responsibility.
Ask her to take you out to lunch or dinner.
She probably flew Spirit Airlines

Peaceful Protest Hasn’t Worked and Has Been Met With Aggression.
She may have been using this excuse to avoid anxiety caused by an overbearing manager or maybe even co-workers that would post something like this. You’ve never called in sick instead of taking a day off? It happens. I doubt she did it to save 0.5 days in her vacation piggy bank. The title of this post indicates to me that you are taking this way too seriously. It’s not that ‘weird’.
Nahh our teams chill AF, most of the time our manager doesn’t even make us submit our PTO/sick days.. so please don’t try to pull that BS victim card. And no, I wouldn’t call in a sick day to go on vacation at the end of a Sprint at the EOQ when we’ve still got goals to hit… lol I try to be considerate of my teammates time/schedule and don’t push my work onto others
Your post and response, unfortunately, are not chill AF.
