I imagine Apple/FB/Google would pay the most, but then again HW is always paid less than software so that may not be true. Anyone know? All I know is that semiconductor companies have almost insultingly low average comp.
Broadcom pay is same as apple. Some levels pay cannot be matched by apple/google also
Broadcom Principal HW engineers easily cross 500k FYI
Broadcom doesn't pay 500k to principal eng.
FB is really good, I'd estimate the pay 20-30% lower than SWE, but that's still unbelievably high for a hardware engineer. I believe I'm paid about twice market value for my experience and skill set at Facebook.
What do you do at Facebook?
How is your WLB and stress level at fb?
HW on AVERAGE may get lower than SW, but it is still VERY possible to get to SW equivalent or higher TC at those companies you listed. The reason people say SW TC > HW TC is because there are much fewer HW companies to get competing offers from for FAANG. However, once you get those competing offers, TC looks very similar. Source: HW eng getting SW equivalent TC.
What is your role? silicon side?
I'm in a silicon org, but doing system level design.
Levels.FYI recently added a hardware section. Some of this is answered there, and more data would certainly help.
Awesome! Appreciate the heads up.
The FB HW refresh is 60% of SWE, but the base salary and bonus are the same as SWE. Google is similar as well. So for IC5 or below, the pay is good. Once you get to IC6 and above, since RSU make up a much bigger portion of your TC, companies like Amazon and Apple which has the most stock appreciation tends to give you the best TC in the long run.
FB refreshers are lower for HWE? Can you share what levels you know the HW refreshers for? This makes a big deal when deciding to go to FB assumed SWE refreshers.
It’s technically 62.5%, at least in my dept. But it’s an across the board ratio, so take whatever the SWE refresh is for an IC level and multiply to get the HWE refresh. We’ve chatted about it on my team and tech pays very well compared to other industries and overall, feel very fortunate.
Dont blame hardware. I have 3 yoe and i get paid more than a lot of sw engineers with more experience. Also i noticed those that say hw get paid less are sw people to boost their own ego
I agree 100%. What's your YOE and TC? I'm joining Apple next month.
And if you were that skilled in software you would be making more. You can make 400+/year in hardware, but it’s a lot less common than in software.
FANBAG :- Facebook Apple Nvidia Broadcom Amazon Google
Broadcom ceo is a bag of dicks though, pick any of the others
Msft I think has an argument for being in this list as well, but it's definitely on the low side of this group.
I see a lack of Intel being mentioned here. Does Intel underpay or has there just not been anyone from that company here yet?
Intel underpays, or at least they used to when I was there
Intel underpays well below market even in Bay area. Unless you are G10 and above Dont expect good pay. Lot of attrition in Portland area due to Apple and MSFT poaching Intel folks with salary bump
