What is the best city in the USA for you to live? Why?

- TC low 100s + medical spouse soon-to-be salary (120-200k) - Like sunshine, humidity not an issue if it’s very coastal, not huge fan of cold - Love good food, EDM concerts/festivals, hiking beautiful mountains, being able to use boats (jet ski/pontoon). Really don’t care for snow sports. - Politically mild, not super dangerous. Especially in regards to property crime and murder. - I’m remote but a decent tech job sector isn’t terrible but not absolute necessity - Houses for under $1.5 mil that are at least 3k square feet - Good schools - Car culture Some things I’ve found from my research: - Seattle checks a lot of boxes but tons of homeless, darkness, crime, traffic and insane cost of living. - Portland similar to Seattle except much smaller. - Los Angeles almost perfect but also terrible crime, insane cost of living, terrible air, terrible traffic, earthquakes/fires, and water not swimmable (yes even in summer it’s cold). - San Diego/SF/SJ same/similar to LA. - Houston is very hurricane prone and the gulf is extremely polluted (https://youtu.be/YQd8FUELp7w, same applies to west Florida). Dallas isn’t particularly great for anything, Austin starting to get west coast problems, and Texas political climate/safety in general across both political parties is questionable. - South eastern Florida almost perfect, hurricanes easy to escape due to warnings as most places are funnest to travel during summer, but no good hikes and I’m far removed from Latin culture. Food was pretty mids too. - West Florida/Tampa is the gulf, when we visited the beaches were covered with dead fish and vultures from red tide that made us cough outside the actual water just from the air (we didn’t dare to step inside the water), this was end of December a low season and this has been only getting worse. Essentially the biggest city scam since most are unaware of this problem and think it’s a great tropical beach getaway. - Denver/Boulder almost checks all the boxes as it has lakes for boats, some city amenities, breathtaking mountains, but it is pretty snowy/cold, has tons of car thefts (https://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/facts-statistics-auto-theft#Top%2010%20U.S.%20Metropolitan%20Statistical%20Areas%20By%20Motor%20Vehicle%20Theft%20Rate,%202020), and one thing I’ve noticed about the residents is their skin is like leather and they age like hell due to the climate, this has been validated by studies (https://www.bestplaces.net/docs/studies/roc_wrinkle_ranking.aspx). Underweight babies, more common miscarriages, far from everything, air quality, and radiation are bonuses. - Phoenix has terrible schools, hits over 100 a lot, and I’d prefer a lawn with grass instead of sand - New York City/New Jersey is amazing but too expensive to actually have a house and northeastern houses are all extremely old. Very cold. Doesn’t have west USA tier mountains either. - Boston same as NYC except city is a lot smaller and it gets much colder. - Raleigh too rural, small city in the woods with mediocre nature and far from coast, don’t quite understand the appeal. Richmond VA tier. - DC/VA/MD area might be the closest to perfect balance.. Big city amenities but not so huge that the houses are completely unaffordable, good jobs, close to coast, close to NYC, great food, mild weather, politically very centrist for a large city, decent nature but the Appalachians don’t shine a light to western USA mountains and beaches aren’t super close either (the Potomac river smells and looks like sludge). Personally I’m kind of between Denver, DC, Miami, and Seattle but have never visited Seattle so don’t know how bad the darkness gets. Which of these four would you pick? Are there some cool cities I missed? Am I being unfair in my judgements? Thoughts?

How’s the crime and air?

Reprise Digital Vk18.0 Dec 11, 2021

Crime is good but the air is bad bro

TLDR: can’t have everything.

IBM 268hljrb OP Dec 11, 2021

For those answering SF/SJ, care to elaborate why? Is the crime overblown in the media? Are you actually annually replacing broken car windows? Is it possible to get 3k square foot house for under $1.5 mil?

First is personalchoice. Yes. No. No.

Apple 581321 Dec 11, 2021

Way overblown. It’s insane, and obvious people haven’t lived in actually dangerous areas in their lives.

San Antonio, TX

What makes you choose this city?

Comscore papa_nuke Dec 11, 2021

I felt San Antonio architecture is similar to Venice, Italy. It might not be the best place if you are not white/Hispanic.

No Philadelphia in the list?

IBM 268hljrb OP Dec 11, 2021

Do you prefer it over the rest of the northeast/mid-Atlantic?

Hawaii is perfect for WFH. Best combination is winter Hawaii, rest of the year Seattle. If you like ski, plus early winter in Denver and back to Seattle in Spring to continue the season. 😆 0 state income tax is the 👑

Does Hawaii and Denver not have state income tax??? That's amazing

Twitter gral Dec 12, 2021

Only Seattle, WA out of the three has no state tax. That's why setting the base camp in WA makes the most economical sense. Seattle summer is heaven! (6 month with 16 hrs 🌞, not hot, one of the most scenic gems in the world) Btw don't live in Seattle downtown. Eastside cities are super close (<20 mins drive), much cleaner and safer.

Northrop Grumman 😞🙁☹️😞😒🙁☹️😞 Dec 11, 2021

San Diego is the best city but quickly becoming more and more expensive thanks to wfh

Texas options are solid. Tbh crime is not really bad in Austin (maybe in some neighborhoods that you wouldn't live or spend time in anyway). Houston crime is a bit worse but city has a lot of cool culture and food. You're not going to notice or care about the gulf pollution. Dallas has less character than Houston IMO but is more "clean" and probably less crime. San Antonio also a more laid back option.

I would avoid Houston bc of crime. Personally experienced it there and it's not a very friendly city. The food is amazing tho

You want central Florida or Cocoa beach (there is always a breeze for the humidity). I think you might be missing that the travel costs to and from Florida especially Orlando is frequently if not only the cheapest in the USA. You can go hike anywhere you want and hike. Cocoa beach is near NASA and has good STEM with all rocket scientists (who you can hang out with). Moreover it is a singular place where people expect others to have differing beliefs and ppl from other countries are frequent visitors. It's a super diverse state with all the good and bad that comes from that. The canoeing, wildlife, and springs are exceptional. You can find great seafood.
