We follow the rules better, when we see a traffic cop. But not, when cops are not there. Let it be school or traffic world, we hate strictness. There is always a love for leniency in name of flexibility. So, what kind of manager you prefer? A) A flexible manager - who lets you take time off whenever you ask for, sets clear career path, proactive in bringing up bonuses and promos. participates in your exit interviews, help negotiating next offer etc. By being lenient, the psychology is you feel guilty as you don't wanna backstab or deliver things late to this manager. You don't wanna be the reason for your manager's target misses. As long as you deliver things by deadline or miss deadline by 15% manager is fine. Never mind, you complete it overnight/weekend or deliver as per JIRA tickets. B) A strict manager - who manages you( not micro-manage) but manages you. Continuously follow up on things, making sure you are on-track, pin-pointing and course correcting your mistakes, adhere to paper rules of the company. If you are missing deadlines or slowing down sprint velocity, brings that up within 2 sprints in 1:1. Mentions that you are pulling down team's velocity as others waiting on your code. #managers
Nobody likes a strict manager.
I should have named it as "managing" typical manager rather than labelling it as "strict manager".
Prefer no manager!
I prefer a manager that’s aggressive for team’s growth but is not micro- managing to achieve it; rather being an example for the team by doing the work the hardest.
A good manager should never be strict. They should essentially be an enabler and politician.
Wrong dichotomy. I want a manager who is strict when needed, lenient by default to help people grow and step in.

Give me the room to do and I’ll do. I’ll do my work without you breathing down my neck. You don’t need to manage me because I manage myself. If I need you for more self-management, I’ll call on you or my KPI’s will reflect it. In the latter case, ask me what’s going on and show that you care about me improving. Take care of me and I’ll take care of you. If I ask for a day off, it’s because I really NEED it. Then I’ll come back and reward you by spending extra time on my work outside of normal working hours. Stay consistent with your style. Don’t make me question what you’ll do next. If my colleagues start abusing and milking your kindness, fire them. Don’t change for anyone.
