What was Sundar Pichai's secret to rising to the top so quickly?

How does a Product Manager rise up the ladder to become a CEO so quickly? What was his secret? Was it because of the high profile products he owned? Looking for some tips to manage my own career...currently L5 and I have a long way to go. Fellow PMs and Googlers - Feel free to chime in. TC: 330K.

It's a combination of being in the right place at the right time and hard work. Satya Nadella had a similar career path

20+yr Msft experience before taking the reign was not fast. and certainly a lot more reasons than listed above

Satya raised from Engineer to CEO. Pitchai did fancy MBA degrees and became leader for high valued products and then elevated. For me Satya is more inspiring than Pitchai. Also, Pitchai sounds arrogant to me

Someone early in my career told me that a key skill is to know "Which way the wind will blow soon". Sundar could do that. He was able to identify key threats to Google's business early on and build products (Toolbar, then Chrome, then ChromeOS) that would help defend Google against those threats. He was able to do that while not pissing off others and worked well with other leaders in the organization and had no ego (unlike, Andy Rubin or Vic G or even Marissa)

Was he the one who came up with those ideas? Or just execution wise?

Microsoft imposter0 Jul 7, 2018

I think execution. Chrome was started by Eric Schmidt quite independently IIRC

He fought hard for high profile projects all while being a good human being and not walking over people. Not easy to do.

Nailed it.

Sounds impossible at Uber. Toe stepping might get u high profile projects but also a lot of enemies. lol

Having McKinsey credentials didn’t hurt either. He’s not a one trick pony.

It’s a challenging environment to be the top and also not walk over others. Especially for a PM
