India specific question. I started at WITCH in 2011. Then prepared for CAT exam back in 2012. Failed. Again in 2013. Got a Tier 1 MBA college. Studied 2 years MBA. That was the norm back in 2012 for average WITCH engineer. Either slog at job and ge H1B after 5,6 years or go for CAT/GMAT or go for government job. I chose CAT as US education was out of budget for me. I studied Supply chain. Now, 3 yrs pre mba & 6 yrs post mba in SCM my package is 33Lpa. (Had ups n downs with layoff, relocation, health issue). I generally never compare myself with peers or juniors. But, now I see 2016 btech passouts are getting similar of higher salary than me in tech. Also, a big portion of my batch moved to TPM, PM role by moving away from traditional business role of marketing, SCM, Consulting etc. In my mba batch in 2016, 15lpa was big deal and Deloitte S&O paid 18Lpa, people were wow! But I had no idea 25-26 yr old dudes are making 35-40lpa now! They don't aspire that much to go abroad on H1B because they can literally afford a flat & car in Pune at this age. 6 yr exp SDE are getting 40lpa in Flipkart while my batchmate in SCM in FK gets 30-35lpa. I am not a coder, even though I studied software engineering in my graduation and left WITCH back in 2014 bcz MBA was cool back then and the tech boom was not there. For us, dream was to get WITCH job. FAANG did not even appear in our dreams. I left WITCH at 3.5lpa in 2014 and got 12lpa in 2016 after mba n thought I made it to the top! When did I miss the bus ? Am I underpaid compared to MBA folks? For sure I make less in a shitty company than FAANG level. I have worked in semicon, consulting, fortune 100 companies and current role is SCM consulting. I am not good at coding etc. I m not a product manager as well. ( I guess chatgpt will replace me in 5 years). What should I do from here to survive next 20 yrs till retirement? How to get more salary? Can I transition to product management?how to get like 70-80Lpa in india or abroad. ( I applied in Amazon once from prog magmt role and after loop they said role fulfilled internally). Need advice. CTC: 33Lpa. YOE: almost 9.5yrs #career #google #microsoft #deloitte #amazon #tech
Dude you are still in the top 3% in the country. Instead of that try to work of improving skills in ur domain. Try getting 6 sigma certification or the green belt. Consider WLB, Job satisfaction and future growth.
Thanks for the advice. 6sigma is kinda de facto, everyone has it. .i have 6 Sigma, CSCP, Ielts 7.5 & speak German at A2 level. (I planned for 2nd masters in germany, dropped the plan after war+ inflation). I am thoroughly confident on my skills in SCM after my certifications. But, I guess SCM as an industry is not a pay master. Asian paints SCM in one of the best in india. But they make 30-40lakhs at my experience not more than that.
You can't do much now. Take care of what you already have and what u r good at. TBH your TC is not that bad. Chill. tech bubble is bursting. Read news reg layoffs
Probably the worst day to ask this question in this group. Yeah read the news. Even my seniors from college are impacted in Amazon india. I am not comparing penny by penny with folks. What hit me was last week a junior told me he is getting 45lpa in Accenture strategy! With total exp of 7yrs. I realised i did not negotiate properly or i missed the bus.
Stop comparing with others , OP
Comparison is the thief of joy. I also started in 2011 and earn around 10L less than you. No matter how much you earn, there would be someone you know or from your batch who will be earning more or more successful than you. There are other things in life also, not everything is about career. But if you don't like your job at all, then no amount of money matters. You should try to move to a role/job you enjoy.
So need to find the Ikigai
Are you looking to relocate to another country ? Or happy with the conditions in India ?
I am willing to relocate. Infact, I lived abroad for 3 years. Laid off during during covid had visa expired. So can't back to india. T then undergone major surgery also. I want to move abroad again. I don't like to stay in india.
why you wanna move abroad and not stay in india
Fucking WITCH companies. My brother was getting paid 3L per annum with just 2 years of experience in 2003!!!! Just think about that ...10 years on...these fuckers actually didn't even increase the salaries ....what a bunch of parasites
3lpa in 2003 is equal to 10lpa in 2023. So back then it was a great deal.
Ideal thing should have been you continued in the tech and utilise the startup boom which happened between 2015 to 2021. But you knew this in hindsight only. Most of us don't have that vision to predict what is next big thing in coming decades. Now tech is Buble zone. Next decade maybe something else. Now better thing for you to do is improve in your own domain and make peace with it.
I am not chasing the number 1 TC. I just want to be in the median TC zone. You see i mentioned, i got 12 lpa out of college in 2016 and it was a decent tc back then. Median also. I failed to understand what happened in last 3, 4 yrs that now less exp folks are getting 45l. And yes, i was in core SCM with less salary with no fancy designation also.
I guess you caught on to the tech train but maybe went wrong in the landing. And sadly the place where MBA salaries grow at the highest rate are at Bschool placements. This trend of mid-senior folks making less than juniors will continue. I expect this shouldn't be the case once we move on to senior-leadership level roles.
Try breaking into PM, TPM roles into companies/startups in SCM, Logistics etc domain like Shipsy, Delhivery, Amazon, etc Expect a 40% bump in your TC. Will likely cross 50lpa Btw what role at Accenture strategy pays 45?
You wasted an engineer seat.
Get into product companies in india Yes if you compare to top tier college students and average engineers in product companies then you are underpaid In india i identify 4 categories for engineers 1 WITCH - very low salaries @10 years 20LPA(bestcase) 2 OEM/ODM - Above average @10 years expect 30LPA 3 product companies - good @10 years 50-70 LPA 4 FAANG - very good @10 years 60 1cr As you go from point 1 -> 4 the number of people decrease but the salaries increase Now who can get to FAANG or product depends on your skill set and experience If you are into coding them hine your skills you have a very good shot at FAANG If you have an MBA then your chance is to have the experience in a field which FAANG need supply chain in software is not much But product managers etc have demand ..
Previously i worked in semicon product, then fortune 100 industrial mfg, now o9 is also a product company. I was laid off earlier so did not have much time, scope & option to get a better role. Also it's my 4th company since 2016. So, my cv is a bit mess. You are right. I fall into cat 1 WITCH and comparing myself with FAANG which clearly not my forte.
