None, they all offer a product and produce monetary value. I can argue that companies that produce knives harm the society
The platform could be subject to misuse, could example, the spread of "fake news", or on the opposite spectrum, censorship.
Cars are also subject to misuse. They can be used to hit pedestrians intentionally, used for a bank heist, etc.
Meta
I’m personally outharming the other companies combined
The one which you can't get in
Please explain?
don’t shit where you eat.
It's very difficult because it depends on what you think harm is. I will say that I don't agree with the mega-status-quo take that anything that makes money is good lol, guess that person would've been pro slavery. Meta's primary products, Insta and FB, have been consistently shown to have a negative effect on the mental health of young users and have also facilitated the spread of misinformation and societal divide. Netflix is pretty value neutral since it's just replacing cable TV, but people can get addicted. Google is very complicated. They produce a lot of good but also are incredibly powerful and arguably hold too much of a monopoly over search and internet ads. Apple and the forced obsolescence controversy made me stop buying their products. Amazon... I think AWS is a good thing, and that cloud makes sense. I think Amazon.com is great in some senses but questionable in others. Meta is the only one I would say is strong negative, although I will say there is nuance because GraphQL and React are dope. Google, Amazon, and Apple are lean negative. Netflix is neutral.
Playing devil’s advocate, Facebook likely has a positive effect on my grandma’s mental health as she is mostly housebound and it allows her to interact with her grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as her peers who also are mostly too old to travel. This likely doesn’t make up for the negative effect it has on teens and everyone else but it is likely a net benefit to certain demographics.
Facebook also had positive effect on my mom's mental health. She is retired and uses FB to talk to me living overseas, to find people from a book club, etc. Besides, if I were to blame one platform for kids, that would be Tiktok. Have you ever tried to create an account, select nothing to give a hint about what you like, and start scrolling videos without giving likes? The kind of video it will show you is very sexual oriented.
What world we live in.. people can carry and fire guns without much of background checks and NRA says "guns don't kill, people kill". And then big tech uses data to target ads and content and they're the bad guys.. that same argument that big tech don't spew misinformation, people do won't apply to the Tucker Carlson's of the world. So no, I don't make my career choices based on what companies do or don't. They are a business, they're not doing anything illegal, and if US government feels they're doing something they shouldn't be, use the law to amend the law so they can't do so.
Would you work for a gun manufacturer or cigarettes company? Let's say the pay and perks are similar to FAANG
I don't see why not. Neither are illegal like I said. If the work is enjoyable (big data, distributed systems etc), compensation and benefits are good I'll join. Fwiw, I'm a "right of center" political viewpoint person (think mitt romney or john mccain in US), but I've worked for an ultra-right political party outside US (equivalent to a Tucker carlson in US) to help them analyze people sentiment in near realtime. It was a lot of fun even if my political ideology was hardly aligned. It was an experience I don't even mention in my resume or LinkedIn profile due to the potential for bias that interviewers/recruiters would imagine.
Meta
Amazon
Meta gets a lot of criticism, but others like Amazon and Apple are also quite guilty. Apple in particular contributes enormously to ewaste with their proprietary BS at the volume they do.
yea everyone ignores how Amazon basically destroyed many small businesses
Make it a poll?
How do I do that?
