Why I Find Free Palestine Inspiring
I am really stuck on deciding which internship to choose. I am a junior, so I may get a return offer from these companies, and would have to consider if I want to work at any of these full time. I have 2 offers: 1. Prudential - Information Technology Intern Responsibilities: -Conducting predictive analysis of data on our virtualization platform, assisting in large scale projects, and supporting data collection teams to evaluate future products -Managing our centralized technology help desk with impactful end-user support: imaging PCs and laptops, deployment of hardware/software related to Windows 10 migration project, and other related assignments -Assisting with asset/inventory management, automation of tasks, and data analysis -Gaining exposure to DB2 fundamentals and standard documentations -Developing and managing SharePoint website content and end-user experience -Use Java, JavaScript, C++, C#, Python, HTML, Git, Splunk, SQL, Tableau, Hadoop, or ETL -Work with AWS/cloud computing software and technologies: Lambda, Docker, ServiceNow, APIs, microservices Pros: -relocation stipend -if full time, closer to home, which is ideally where I want to be -decent internship pay at $30/hr and $45/hr OT Cons: -Based on Glassdoor, full time offer salary may be low. Have also seen posts on Blind and Reddit complain about low salary 2. Advanced Analytics Company (not disclosing name b/c they have small intern class and it may reveal my identity) - Machine Learning Intern Responsibilities: -Contribute to projects spanning multiple subject areas, from NLP to Cloud to Image and Video Analysis -Learn about state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, methods, and platforms, with a focus on open source software -Implement, configure, and test machine learning and deep learning libraries and platforms (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch, fast.ai) -Become familiar with and utilize elements of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) ecosystem -Write blog posts and presentations that clearly communicate complex machine learning concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences -Contribute to modern, web-enabled prototype applications that illustrate relevant machine learning capabilities Pros: -More technical focused compared to Prudential -Based on Glassdoor, may offer higher full time salary compared to Prudential, but not that much higher -Internship pay at $30/hr Cons: -No relocation stipend for internship -if full time, location is not close to home I am not sure which role or area I want to work in after graduation, so which of these companies will give me skills that will make me competitive to a broader range of companies or FAANG? The largest disadvantage for Prudential is that their full time salary may be on the lower end. For the ML company, their disadvantage is not providing relocation stipend or support, and based on Glassdoor, their full time salaries aren't significantly higher than Prudential's. I realize that Glassdoor salaries have a huge part in influencing my decision, but the reality is that Glassdoor may not be an accurate reflection of the actual offer I may get for full time. I would love to hear people's thoughts because I have been mulling this over in my mind for an entire week now and can't seem to make a decision.
Should’ve created a poll. Re-post with a poll
At this early in your career focus on what position will give you the most exposure in your desired field as opposed to how much more $ you make per hour. Second one sounds more interesting to me but depends on what your goal is.
Goal is to work at FAANG or similar company as a product manager. Would want to be a SWE at FAANG, but I've still got a long ways to go before I've sharpened my coding skills to have a chance at passing their interviews, so that's why PM may be the best fit for me given skills and interests. Would want to have my own startup a few years after being in the industry.
Good for you for having such goals. Keep working hard and you'll get there. 👍
