Why don’t tech workers unionize?

Wouldn’t being in a tech worker union make TC go up? A good model would be the big 3 North American sports leaugues (NFL, NBA and MLB). Those unions seem to do quite well for their members. What say you?

Sports players don't job hop like tech workers do. Only if tech workers stay at one company until retirement would union make sense.

They do, see Lebron James, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, etc... They job hop way more.

They do. Those that don't probably don't because of same reasons tech people don't; pay is fair and family/hometown

SAP tiipo Nov 12, 2019

Nah...don't want that. Unionization makes it too difficult to hire and fire people. It makes it difficult for new talent to get the job. I am all for At will employment. The best way to increase TC for high performers is to shop around. It seems to be working fine.

Government is unionized and union doesn't have enough say in hiring and lawful termination to warrant it even being called a "say" The only time unions have power is when agencies break the law in regards to termination. If it's a lawful termination, for performance, what the union would do is step in when the agency fails to do the PIP right. Even then, it's often AFTER the termination is effected The "unionization makes it too difficult to hire and fire people" is flat out BS. Managers are too lazy and dumb to follow the rules they wrote and agreed to to fire people is the real problem. Source: fed for 15, union for 5

Oh...federal government for sure is known for its efficiency...right ?

I'm up for unionizing against leetcode interviews and boycotting them. (And not asking them in the first place). Unionize against interview prep as a business, and show people like Gayle McDowell their place.

Microsoft msnewbie Nov 12, 2019

Absolutely! We should abolish Leetcode interview and make hiring decision based on race, gender and how well you can brag about your previous experience. It will help tech companies hire the right people to achieve the diversity goal. Leetcode is the roadblock that impedes diversity.

Amazon vf6fdk Nov 12, 2019

I knew tech workers are too dumb to understand the importance of what I'm saying here. Go ahead feed Gayle McDowell and others your hard earned money.

Because most of tech workers are young and naive. They think their streak will never end. On day you will be 40-50 you get kick to the curb because company wants to make room for young blood and you won’t find another job because you are too old in the eyes of 25 year old who interviews you. For full disclosure, I do think modern unions take it too far, but I also love history and understand that many modern perks and protections that we enjoy today would not exist without unions. There has to be a middle ground somewhere

Amen brother! Their time will come in due time.

eBay bnskdkr Nov 12, 2019

Because tech workers are selfish and greedy. They are scared if they unionize they will get fired.

I am for unionisation. When we get faster machines at work or on AWS, it's putting us out of work and taking our jobs away. We have to stand up against this kind of thing or who knows where it'll lead.

Most don't even know what unionization is really about. Many unions end up being corrupted to the same extent that management becomes corrupt

OpenTable Meliodas Nov 12, 2019

No. A workers’ council with board membership would make more sense.

eBay bnskdkr Nov 12, 2019

Another reason is that many people are out there in the industry with fake experiences they are struggling to survive, so no time for unions
