Why is US so soft on China

China was a poor and over-populated nation till they started getting a piece of the US trade. Most of their prosperity came from selling plastic to US and they just grew from there. Now they are openly hostile to America. They build islands in south china sea to threaten US navy and its allies. They unleash cyber warfare against US along with Russia, they openly engage in currency manipulation to harm US economy. Steal US trade secrets. Trumps trade war didn't do much to them because they just responded back in kind. That Chinese executive got bail and most probably will be free as a bird soon. My question is what stops the US from punishing Chinese more severely ...

Because you are a married sex addict.

Add drugs to that list too and if you remove the married part. I will take the above as a compliment :)

USA consumerism is dependent on a cheap source of goods. We don’t have many other cheap sources of goods.

EMC dicpic OP Dec 20, 2018

I'm pretty sure that countries like Vietnam, Philippines, India will help out with that.... given some assistance (just like what was given to Chinese in the 50s).

Help out? It's economics not a circle of friends. It will take a long time for the rest of Asia to be able to reach the output capacity that China has right now.

Microsoft SatyaClaus Dec 20, 2018

Um, because we have no way of doing that unilaterally that does hurt us greatly.

Microsoft SatyaClaus Dec 20, 2018

That’s adorable.

Airbnb jim.hodlen Dec 20, 2018

EMC dicpic OP Dec 20, 2018

China has enough influence and power to control key politicians. Bankers are heavily invested in the Chinese economy, so they will use their political power to ensure a prosperous Chinese economy.

India is trying to repeat the China miracle but cannot. America, get more Indian talents back here. We need them to be not just the second largest democracy, but the second largest economy!

China as a country has a sizable economy but individual quality of life is far behind of other Asian countries which are also pretty far behind US. Infra is mess with cars going to opposite lanes and people crossing the roads and laws and medicals are not properly set up yet. Social systems are not there yet. It takes time and China will get there someday but China is at 1980s South Korea. Dictatorship works because of that. People will start demanding democracy and social welfare once the country passes certain threshold. China is still developing and will become like a developed country in hopefully 10-20 years (at least major cities).

Did I miss something? Trump might be one of the most anti-Chinese presidents since the Korean War. He literally started a trade war against China and people are suggesting he is soft on them? This sounds so much like the propaganda where you try to make it look like your opponent supports a common enemy.

Do you know of any Chinese brands which are as desired as Nike, Levi’s, Apple, Tesla, or even Away Suitcases and Allbird sneakers? The US is still most desired country to live in, human capital will always prevail.

New
ffffuuuuun Dec 20, 2018

What does human capital mean in this sense? China has over 1.3 billion people and are a market unto themselves. Sure we don't hear of them in the West but their monthly active users are way bigger than ours for all but the largest of tech giants ie. Facebook/Google.

Oracle mqMs36 Dec 21, 2018

But Nike apple and Levi’s are all made in China now , correct? And Tesla is building a factory in China too

Apple hMWF54 Dec 21, 2018

Maybe because China owns 1.2 trillion dollars of US public debt, a large amount of US businesses depend on China and China has invested quite a lot in US and governors don’t want to give up.

Druva oddflxbtok Dec 21, 2018

So less than 10%. Also US debt doesn’t work like yours or I’s debt. It cannot he called upon randomly. It has a set repayment period and maturity. We could decide to stop paying back all foreign tomorrow and the only recourse a country would have would be to take us to the WTO or go to war. The downside would be that no foreign government would ever buy our debt again.

Apple hMWF54 Dec 21, 2018

US need foreign countries to continue investing, otherwise we go bankrupt
