Will Google match Uber offer?

Jun 16, 2019 62 Comments

I got an L5a offer from Uber:
195k base
27k bonus
720k share value (based on current stock price)

TC $402k/yr

I passed L5 at Google, and I'm waiting for the offer stage. Would Google match this offer? If they did which would you choose?

There is no *countering* of Albertsons

    • Before you counter Albertsons with Google, keep in mind the impact that the summer internship at Albertsons will have on your resume and long term career goals.

Don’t day trade with your career.

L5 at Google is equivalent to an intern at Albertsons, but I'd take it in a heart beat!

5b is comparable to 6 at f and g. Check levels FYI, also I have a friend who got 5b offer of 550k and heard that it is the average, doesn't seem like l5 offers from f g

Yeah levels.fyi is based on compensation. So doesn't get it right always.

I don’t think so... but it’s easy to believe the media hype / negativity.

Google match would depend on the interview. Those are pretty high numbers for L5.

I personally know someone who got an offer around $600k for L5. Google can make it happen if they want you enough. No this personal was not ML focus - was on infra/distributed systems side of things. Oh and here’s the kicker - they rejected the offer :)

Between Uber and Google, all things equal, I would personally go to Uber. Good luck with your decision. I feel Uber is on fire 🔥🔥

Uber only grants RSUs now. So, 720k grant over 4 years sounds about right.

    Congrats.

The offices are pretty far from each other. If Google matches I’d take the one with the shorter commute / location you prefer.

What are the other things that you value in addition to short term TC? Those can and should help in your decision.

First and foremost is the quality of people you work with. That determines your personal growth.

Second is the overall quality of tools, infrastructure and engineering. That determines how productive you could be.

Third is how well you connect with the product/mission. That determines how motivated you’d be to go to work daily.

And finally the manager and the team. Your career promotions and the kind of projects you do largely depends on the manager for entry - mid engineers. A good manager can make all the difference in the world.

And of course pay and happiness, because at the end of the day we have families to feed and needs to be taken care of.

      Exactly my point. Well said.

Some factors are macro — company mission, if you want a mature environment or a malleable one. Do you need process or do you thrive in chaos/freedom?

Some factors are micro — do you like who you work with? Do you have the opportunities for growth that you need?
