I recently got a job offer from a hardware team of AMD/Xilinx in San Jose. Can anyone tell me about the company culture? I am specifically looking to know about management’s clarity in projects/vision, growth opportunities, work life balance, peers, any roadblocks for new hires, etc. I have been hearing mixed reviews. New TC: 220k Yoe:5
Cons Very brutal. You heard of drinking from firehose, this is drinking from Niagara Falls. Long hours, low pay. No real clarity from management as the structure is bottom up. Pros But really rewarding as we are #1 right now and everyone is very smart/supportive. We want to keep our edge at demolishing Intel/NVIDIA + servers. Very prestigious. Scrappy startup like mindset. You’re empowered to do anything and reach out to anyone to get what you need done.
Thanks for your inputs. These cons were pretty much what I heard too before posting here.
Don’t let this discourage you. The work we do at AMD is bar none. We’re killing it on all levels and no one can dream to touch us even if we stop for a whole year. Don’t join if you think you’re gonna coast at 50h per week. Expect 70h+ minimum.
Prepare to be a multi tasker. You’ll perform the work of 3 engineers.
3 Intel engineers.
For every 3 Intel engineers, you’re lucky to get a 1/3 AMD engineer output.
Op>> if you are going to join this company then get ready to loose 1) work life balance 2) satisfaction of achievements- this is because you are not at all awarded for your work by most of the managers. 3) crossplatform integration to gain knowledge and hence the diversity in projects. 4) supportive team and managers since politics is played badly on every level in this company . 5) your work credits will be always given to other teams if you are working with them on any projects (just to make sure you wont get any promotions, hikes and bonus) 6) if u hv made up your mind to join then you should be leader on the veryyyyy first day to handle project ( even if you are new hire,!!) 7) get ready to loose all bonus and stuff for the year you joined since the rating wont be good for new hires ( mostly 2L or 3) 8) Think of these points to make a wise call and act on it.
Agree mostly, but kind of exaggerated
vifjgkv >> exaggeration in your opinion.. ‘in depth’is my opinion😎
Worked at xilinx for over a year. Most weeks I do about 50 hours. When shit gets bad I run 60-80 hour weeks. My management viewed these as extremely uncommon hours, and I ended up getting awarded at the end of the year for closing some significant projects that otherwise would've been delayed. So some teams have pretty fair wlb and reasonable recognition. Ymmv
Good to know Sir Deez
Serdes can you mention your TC and YOE? Seems like you were heavily lowballed at whatever level you joined.
It all depends on the team..if you are hired from Xilinx side be prepared to down-leveled as AMD-> Xilinx mapping was worst in any acquisition possible. My juniors have resigned from Xilinx joined other company for 6 months and have been leveled up twice. People who have left and joined have made from E4 to MTS, where as people from Xilinx are still in E5 & E6 level. After acquisition the refreshers suck, Xilinx had way better stock compensation. Only plus point is you will be part of a team which makes best CPU and FPGA in the market. Way ahead than competition. Don't buy the story of beating nvidia that's a decade away to come close to them also they will be way ahead as all generative AI's use their products. Roadmap seems to be good as of today, but future you never know, if we Amd could take down Intel , I'm not sure what will stop others doing the same to AMD. Anyhow most data centre are migrating towards arm/ risc based arch. All in all you will like the products rest not sure, if you aren't in the core architect team itself.
This is exactly what happened. The e8 to smts mapping is so wrong. But hang on, this is irrelevant if OP is negotiating an offer today , he is essentially joining amd, so none of this should matter
Depends, if he's joining Xilinx side and there are people more experienced than him already in the team it's less likely to give him better than others. Still 220k is a good offer though
Really depends on your team. I don't work more than 40hours a week and received a 1 rating in latest review
Must be a fabled 10x engineer.
This place is paradise for people who LIVE TO WORK. Congratulations 🎉 and it’s a good time to join, if you are on client side of things, you are screwed, good luck.
Thanks, could you explain what you mean by client side of things?
I think he means cpu and gpu for pc gamers, creators, etc (a market that did poorly this year for many companies compared to covid years when everyone wanted to build PCs and mine crypto). This is not really applicable to xilinx as these are core amd products.
AMD run like startup, and manager needs more training on people skill.
I joined Xilinx an years ago. I really like wlb and pay structure as well. Xilinx product are doing good and will do good in future. After AMD acquisition some benefits has become bad but overall it's still nice.
