I'm new to this site but I have been looking at the process for a job at Blizzard Entertainment, could anyone provide some tips on the interview process/work balence/culture? The reviews don't look too good on here... #gaming
Come to EA! We have cookies!
EA is as same as ATVI but with much less pay and with worst management.
I think that depends on the role and the team. It sounds like you may have had a bad experience?
Stay the fk away from blizzard. Just no.
The morale at Blizzard is pretty much in the gutter. Activision is more stable but the work is boring because more than likely, you'll only ever end up working on Call of Duty. And there have been some very questionable executive hiring decisions recently that make me question the future of the company as a whole.
Join company who made genshin impact.
Why? Most of it was a Breadth of the Wild knock off. The only reason why it did well was because of that and because console gamers discovered gacha games for the first time. Soon we'll see more Gacha games that actually are good.
They are hiring in US, exclusively looking for dev who speaking Mandarin.
Go for Rockstar. Pretty sure because of the RDR2 drama they're too scared to have us crunch. Been here 2 years now and have never had to do more than 40 hours.
Pretty sure companies don’t give a shit. It’s not like it hurt RDR2 sales.
No it didn't, but everyone talks and they know crunch is an issue. That said in a few years when we're close to shipping I wouldn't be surprised if we have to crunch again. I'm lucky enough our department doesn't have to crunch as hard as others.
It seemed culty back when I interviewed, very "you should be honored to work here" type attitude instead of the "work with us on this awesome project" attitude that I like to see from employers who treat you as a valued contributor instead of a resource to milk. That and I've stopped playing their games because of how grindy, unfun, and cash shop focused they became.
Ah yes, the entitled attitude that companies take to make their garbage work cultures seem prestigious. Amazon comes to mind. 😂
It's a dump of a studio now. Stay away from the big studios if you value your time, creative freedom, and health.
Stay away from the entire gaming industry if you care about work balance and culture.
I would challenge that opinion. It's not that the industry is awful, just the big publishers (typically). There are plenty of independent studios that are rewarding. Indie makers, too. Your studio got acquired? Hop to a new one to avoid merging. All the Blizzard folks are bailing for Dreamhaven and other ventures that aren't beheld to ridiculous time crunches and finance projections for investors.
No, the industry is awful. There are some exceptions, almost all in indie studios, but the overall industry is toxic, engages in boom/bust hiring/firing due to projects starting and ending, has shitty WLB, etc. It is not just the big studios, though they are notably bad
I had an interview with both. Blizzard was just an HR/recruiter interview, then a final round with the manager then the rest of the team. Eventually I was ghosted. Activision I chatted with the manager for a 30 minutes or so, then the team, then the VP right after. They gave me an offer but I had another offer that i felt was a better fit. It wasn't anything too technical. Just a pretty easy going chat. Seemed like easy going guys that enjoyed it there. These were more system engineering, infra type jobs.

Activision is garbage. Go try for Take Two or EA if you want to get into gaming
Riot Games is definitely the best entry point. Better pay, less crunch, more interesting work
