Would I be a fool to not take nvidia here? (internship)

Roughly the same pay (not that it matters for internships) NVIDIA - distributed systems. rust, golang, some kubernetes Tesla Autopilot - advanced C++, neuralnet compiler (i think under the code foundations org) Background: go to a shit tier state school. taught myself C++ and computer architecture from scratch to pursue what I was passionate in. most of my work experience is in advanced C++ and am pursuing a masters for a better background in high performance. But, the more I stick it out in this subfield the more I feel like an impostor and that I don't know shit about anything. not that good at metaprogramming, not that good at computer architecture/ kernel dev, okay at algorithms but no where near codeforces level. jack of all trades master of none. My top priority is career progression / a role that offers commensurate leveling with job performance. NVIDIA pros: manager seems chill, good company culture and likely better WLB. manager heavily implied to me that there was a very strong chance of RO. the org I'm in has barely any people and is building - gives me startup within a company vibes cons: lower pay and unclear progression. this would also cement my career as one in web and not high perf / C++. Tesla AP pros: work is super interesting, strong potential for growth, closer to my original motivation for not sticking it out in web. autopilot org TC is supposedly in the 300-500 range cons: horrible reputation, low morale, manager known as a hardass. from my impression, good chance that I crash and burnout I've suffered from pretty severe depression in the recent past and have crashed and burned before. But, I also tie a lot of my self esteem to personal fulfillment and what I managed to accomplish in life (James Scholz is a big role model of mine). I'm torn as to what to do because I don't want to regret not working harder in life but want to maintain my physical and mental health at the same time. Can anyone with some experience in either org offer some insight? I feel like I would be a fool for NOT taking the safe route here. But, an internship is a perfect way to do a trial run, though I don't need the resume experience. I could do both potentially but that would offset my grad date. Sorry how could I forget the blind tax! TC: peanuts and pennies #nvidia #tesla #autopilot

I would suggest go for nvidia. If you've suffered mentally, it is good to give yourself a break and take it easy. If Nvidia can give you that, I think you should assign higher points for it. Since this is an internship, don't put too much emphasis on pay. When you get RO, you can try to negotiate with competing offers and having nvidia in your resume can get you that.

If we were to assume that I am fully recovered would you still choose NVIDIA? I am most concerned that this choice is defining my career path and am trying to gauge whether the risk of working in at AP would be worth the potential growth.

Yes. I would still choose Nvidia. There is only so much one can do and learn in a 3 month internship and I would rather have a satisfactory internship at Nvidia than a heavy 3 month internship at Tesla that might end up as a burn out end of summer. Also, given the shaky job market, Nvidia has the higher probability of a RO, whereas Tesla has laid off people in the past.

Do Nvidia. Even if it’s in bubble territory, it looks good on your resume. The tech stack is in more demand right now too.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if I go down the high performance / systems route doesn't Autopilot look better? My team at nvidia is distributed systems, which is essentially backend web.

Tesla AP is the only group in tesla worth considering for swe there so its a tough decision. Id say here go with the company you likely wont crash at. Id assume NVIDIA is better for wlb

SingleStore xsqv11 OP Mar 26

Yea I wouldn't think twice about the rest of tesla, but 300-500 is no joke, I have friends using citadel ng to negotiate it up to 500.

Meta openBfd Mar 26

I wouldnt worry about tc here. Honestly 300-500 is whatever for senior ic at faang+. Just go with the one based on interest + wlb

Eh don't listen to people speaking out of their portfolios. Choose the job before choosing the company. You'll be happier.

How are you liking Nvidia's culture?

NVIDIA DGVc12 Mar 26

I love it but that's only because I got the job I wanted. I'm a systems guy and I can tell you that doing web isn't going to scratch that itch. Although if it's just an internship, you can try

Easily Nvidia. Don't take the job with the bad manager. That's the worst thing for your mental health.
