Hi, I am deciding between Google and Amazon. I got an L4 SWE offer from Google in Mountain View. I was matched to the Google search product area without any specific team. TC is 275k plus 30.5k relocation. For Amazon, I got an L5 applied scientist offer in Seattle. I have talked to the team leader and members and I am interested in their projects. TC is 295k. Amazon offers a higher compensation, especially taking state tax into consideration. Currently I am leaning towards Amazon. I am confident that I can get promoted once in 2-3 years, but I heard that it is extreme hard to get promoted to L7 in Amazon. There are also many negative comments about Amazon in this app, which makes me concerned. Should I choose Amazon in this case? update: Google search ranking is the core area of Google. Will I learn a lot in this org? Thanks #amazon #google #compensation #offer
Hi - I don’t have enough experience to help evaluate those offers but I was wondering how you negotiated that relocation. Seems higher than the standard relocation package that I’ve seen around
I have not negotiated the relocation. This is the initial number from hr.
Go for Amazon. If both work and TC are better, why hesitate?
Thanks for the reply. Just because the negative comments about amazon in this app😂
I understand the apprehension, but tbh most Amazonians don’t go about their day to day feeling angsty, angry, sad, or depressed. A lot of us are actually happy with what we do and are actively growing our skills and careers. If things go south, you know you have the ability to get a job in Google or any other tech firm. You have already proven it with these two offers. So think about TC, think about the work you are going to do, and think about what you will like more. All the best!
Work as an AS in Amazon will be different from work as a SWE in Google. What do you like more?
I like research, but I heard that the main focus of AS is still production. Meanwhile, there are also some research and machine learning in google search teams. So I am not sure the difference would be large.
Ask to speak to peers on both side and ask about their day to day. Since you are deciding, I am sure the recruiters would do their best to facilitate the calls for you.
Yoe?
0... I am new grad. Btw, I also got Bloomberg’s offer and I declined it
If you received L4, you just be phD then. In that case, AS might work out well for you.
Google, because it is easier to get into any company with that in your profile. And Silicon Valley vs any other place. You don’t really have to think a lot.
Haha, some Amazon people in this thread just said Amazon is an easy choice in my case🤣
I think you also need to consider that Google offers good refreshers every year so that should balance your tcs. Plus the overall benefits I think are better at Google compared to Amazon. As for the work, its just a risk you have to take in either case. The work might sound interesting from an external perspective but the day to day activities of the team could be stressful. Its a tough choice between WLB and type of work but personally I would prefer Google.
I did some simple math. The tc will be the same if I got 80k refresher per year. The after tax income matches if I got 120k refresher...
Are you a PhD ?
Yes
easy choice, goog
Very easy choice - Google
Amazon = more money, lower COL, no state income tax, and a team you’re interested in. Seems like an easy choice.
Because there are many bad comments about Amazon, eg. refreshers, wlb, pip
