Feeling depressed 😔
Current TC $145k (salary + bonus, not eligible for RSUs) 3.5 yoe, Phoenix, AZ I am interviewing with Apple for Software Engineer - Data (basically data engineer but using Java) and after finishing my round with the hiring manager, I’m not sure if I even want to work at Apple anymore. It sounds no different than my role American Express - a big corporation with lots of regulations and processes, not using cutting edge technology, average benefits in comparison to other tech companies, etc. I know the pay would be better and it’s definitely a better name for the resume, but I guess I’m sort of disenchanted since I thought working at Apple would be a much more glamorous experience than it actually sounds like. Forced RTO, needing to relocate to be near my team’s office, and employees don’t even get free lunch. Can anyone chime in with experiences of working at Apple? #engineering #software #swe #apple #amex #faang
You get 25 percent off 3500.dollar ski goggles, that's got to count for something.
It lets you ski in summer while sitting on your couch. That means a whole lot for some people 🤪
I recieved a mail last friday (03/08) to provide my availability to connect with hiring team member for one of the data roles and have received no response yet! I have sent follow up emails, yet no reply! May i know how long does it take generally or am i being ghosted!!!
I’m not sure. I was sent an email to set up times for a meeting with the hiring manger, I think I skipped the initial round interviews.
Hello fellow Phoenician
What’s good, you working at Amazon in Tempe?
Yep!
Apple was never known to be a glamorous place to work. Their products are truly glamorous though.
Everything you said about working at Apple is true, but so what? It’s a job. It’s not a magical fairyland. Apple does not coddle its employees and it’s entirely possible your current job is better.
Yeah I assumed all FAANG was a magical fairyland and Apple was my golden goose. It’s all a rat race in the end no matter where you work
Data roles are not great in big companies and they use legacy/internal stack which will not have any value in the market. Look for medium size companies
145k at amex with just 3 YOE? Did you start as a Engineer II?
FAANGs do have top talent and that peer group increases your skill level over time. However it is easy to rise up in a smaller company and the laterally transfer to a FAANG at senior positions.
It's...a job. If you want something glamorous, start your own company building space ships like Musk or start experimenting with A.I./ML and discover the next break through and become famous. If you think working at any company in corporate America is going to be "glamorous" good grief you got another thing comin'. Repeat after me: Companies do not give a flying shit about you.
Did they mention the need to relocate? I’m currently interviewing and they have not mentioned relocation as of now. Interested to see when they brought it up?
I guess you don’t have to relocate but the hiring manager told me the expectation is to be in office 3x days a week, Tuesday-Thursday. I thought about doing some commute shenanigans, especially if I could go into a SoCal office since that’s only a 5 hour drive from me, ~1 hour flight, but I was told I would have to be based out of the Seattle office. I’d assume for most people you’d need to relocate in order to meet the RTO requirements. They sound serious about it too, no exceptions. This role is backfilling for someone who either quit or was let go because they would not RTO. The hiring manager made it sound like he was let go, the term he used is “no longer with the company”.
