Israeli precision-guided munition likely killed group of children playing foosball in Gaza, weapons experts say
This week got offers from Facebook and Google. Need to make a decision. Wanted opinion on certain aspects. Offer details, Total work experience 9years. Currently Senior SDE at Amazon (Total 430 k , thanks to stocks appreciation but targeted at 345-350) Facebook - 210k , 960k stocks spread across 4 years And 70k signon. I think 20% bonus. This is for E6 , which recruiter mentioned is equivalent to Senior tech lead/Principal in other firms. Google (After facebook negotiation) - 190k base, 720k stocks 4 years monthly vest and 50k signon. 15% bonus iirc. This is T5 , senior. Both are verbal offers and still open. Google HR mentioned level can not be changed since hiring committe feels I need more substantial experience(Not even sure what it means). Certainly Facebook comp seems better, however team matched in Google complements my domain expertise. How difficult is to go from T5 to T6 in Google? Also reason I am looking out is WlB (pulling 70hrs a week from past year), does Fb have manageable workload ? Any idea about general accepted ramp up time in Fb before being productive for E6 ? Thank you in advance for help.
Take FB. They have already pegged you higher. Just prove yourself solidly and try for E7 in few years. My 2 cents.
Is that for Seattle?
Yes
That’s insane comp, especially for 9 yoe
It's not easy to make T6 at google.
Yeah, that is the impression I have. Lots of things need to lineup to have a shot at T6 I guess.
Both incredibly strong offers, I think you've got to go with your gut on where you'd feel best able to add value and be happy.
Thanks for the reply, yeah I see pros and cons for both. Might as well sleep on it for couple of days and go with gut feel. Choosing seems more stressful that giving interviews(maybe because now I actually need to pull the trigger)
I would go for Facebook. Isn’t E6 higher than T5?
There is some intersect, but usually yes
SDE3 @9 years of experience coming in at E6 may be a bit of a stretch. Expectations are very high at E6, review cycles are 6 months, WLB is pretty bad in a lot of teams, there’s non-trivial adjustment to culture - all things that will add up to make it pretty stressful.
I don’t think a SDE-3 coming in at E6 is a stretch by any imagination. What makes you think so?
That I came from Amazon and I actually work at Facebook?
E6 is definitely better. But it may be a bit of stretch.
Yup going with E6.
The FB offer is definitely better, and both base and stock grant seem top of the range. However if WLB is a concern at all, Google is by far the better choice. Very high stress is the norm at FB and you're expected to be ok with it.
Thanks for reply. I see it is almost common consensus that Fb doesn't have that great of Wlb. But the offer is making me think twice !!
Don’t come to FB for wlb, specially as an e6 new hire. You have to work hard to prove you deserve your level because you don’t have working history at FB
I thought interviews were sufficient to prove that I can operate at the level hence the offer. Honestly, I would have expected some time for industry laterals to settle in before the expectation to perform at high level kicks in. Though it seems Fb seems to have different expectation.
You need to make a real e6 impact. this is very different from 5-6 hour great interview performance.
Get G to match FB and take G. Wlb will be better. T6 at G and FB are equivalent from what I hear so FB expectations will be much higher.
This is final offer from G (and this was after letting them know about Fb). They looked reluctant to negotiate initially as well.
If you value 90k per year more than wlb go fb. If you're fine staying at T5 at G for a while while having good wlb compared to fb and don't care about comp increasing more then go G.
