Massive Layoffs at Samsung Research America

Hello there, Today, the entire team got an email from the manager saying that they will hold a mandatory in-person meeting. The team is split into two groups, and there will be two meetings, and the HR has been invited to both of them. I am getting very anxious, and I want to know if this is a layoff, selective layoff, or reorganization of the team. I am a new grad employee, so I have no idea how these things work. If someone with industry experience can tell what this means, that would be great. Company: Samsung TC: $165k #tech #layoff #samsung #reorg

It’s either a layoff or a selective layoff. Reorgs don’t usually involve HR. Keep us posted.

Reorgs almost always involve HR specifically for org design as well as if you’re talking about reducing headcount or changing roles as a part of that change.

In past experiences this is a layoff.

Then why are they holding two separate meetings?

One group stays

Sounds like one group is gone, the other stays. Having the laid off in front of those that stay may create lots of jealousy. That’s why I think it’s splitted that way.

We are a team of 50 people and losing even half will halt all the progress. Do you think even that is the case?

Amazon tomsgk Sep 13, 2023

Halting progress?? No one gives a damn. Sanity check for you rn will be to check who’s in what group. You’ll easily be able to figure out who’s gone

Which org is this?

Coalfire wasntmehe Sep 13, 2023

If HR is on the invite it’s a layoff or a sexual harassment training.

What is this? American Idol?

Which Samsung? Both SEA and SSI are not doing well right now. I’m also personally won’t be surprised if I’ve got laid off.

Skyworks Solutions stienmetz Sep 15, 2023

Just curious, what is SEA and SSI?

Samsung 펜타닐 Sep 15, 2023

SEA = Samsung Electronics America, they make phones, appliances, and other consumer electronics. This is the Samsung most people are familiar with. SSI = Samsung Semiconductor Inc. They sell/manufacture chips through subsidiaries. OP’s group is SRA Samsung Research America. It has reputation to be relatively well-paid. They gave us Bixby. There are also many of other subsidiaries that are run as independent companies that focus on other business.
