I have been trying to transition into the field of iOS engineering. I have over 3 years of experience doing Java development. I always thought that there was not a lot of talent for iOS engineering hence there would be very low supply of qualified engineers. I had a thought that it seems like there are so many people trying to do machine learning that itās going to be crazy over saturated. So I decided to pick up iOS engineering on the side while working my current job also leet coding like crazy too. Whatās going on? Why are there over 300 applications for every iOS engineering job? When did the supply of qualified iOS engineers get so high? Looking through blind and Google searches it was stating that itās hard getting iOS engineers since not many people know how to do it. So I assumed great Iāll have low competition. I feel like Iāve been duped! I have no clue how Iām going to transition into this role. Feel like Iām going to be stuck as a Java developer. Not sure if companies want to have swift devs vs generalists, and if they really want mobile devs maybe react native or kmp is a better strategy?š¤·
Very interesting take. My experience it seems for every 10 jobs 7 do native development objective C, a lot of swift, UIKit, SwiftUI and 3 use some sort of react. It seems currently native is still king.
There is no such thing as low competition in dev jobs. But iOS has one of the lowest, I feel. There may be tons of applicants, but a lot of them are not qualified, and this number is still lower than Android and backend overall
This is true for every role.
Exactly my point, there's nothing inherently more or less competitive about mobile roles
My thoughts mirror yours for android. Like im reading so many sr offers for 400k on blind and im like where are these offers even in the bay or nyc
Honestly man I am trying to move to LA I have been trying to since 2019 but the pandemic ruined that. Now itās about to be 2024 and I am desperately trying to leave Michigan. Born and raised here and now I am turning 32 in a week. I gotta get out of here. All I am trying to do is find a iOS engineering job that has good WLB that pays at least 150k. Iāll do remote or even full RTO in Los Angeles but having hard time getting even an interview despite having over 3 years of experience in java development at ford.
OP - my company has some open positions. Try looking and apply if interested
Replying to all. I guess Iāll keep on trying. I really want to specialize in this field but the longer I wait I feel like itās harder to get in because Iāll have so much Java experience. The other issue is I have been leet coding like crazy using Java having a hard time working close to 60 hours and leet coding everyday after work. I donāt have time to focus on actual iOS development technology.
iOS is the worst possible choice. The technology is quickly becoming obsolete. Everyone can actually develop an iOS app in less than 1 hour, and that counts as "experience". Lots of junior positions are filled with people (know few of them) that even don't know what a byte is. Much better Android.
Itās an interesting take that you suggests. Especially because it seems your advice counters what people have said in this thread stating most people do not know iOS engineering and a lot of posts on iOS development on blind are saying they are having a hard time finding qualified applicants to do iOS engineering. I am assuming youāre suggesting doing backend yet others have posted that backend engineering is even more saturated than iOS development.
Lmao dude how? How are 75 entry level applicants applying for a staff iOS engineering job at Reddit? That makes no sense š

I am working on both iOS, Android and Backend/Java development. I found Android and Java devs jobs have lot of candidates. Very few iOS developers who can work on complex projects. Right now I am sticking with iOS. Learning cross platform app development framework like ReactNative is also good option.
