Hi there! I’ve been doing iOS development for 7.5y now and I’m starting to get worried about the future. I have a family to take care of so career decisions have a little more weight than when I was younger. I’m not interested in PM or similar roles, I’d like to keep on coding. When it comes to future proof options what do you see? I know that, specially in tech, there’s no way to predict the future so I’m not looking for the perfect option here. I’m just trying to minimize the risks and try to stay relevant to the market. These are my two favorite options so far (but I’m open to hear more!): - stick to swift/obj-C + Apple systems + any new things that people start using swift for. - move to backend and focus on that (maybe keeping some swift side-projects alive) What are you thoughts? Is Apple gonna be around in a decade?
If you have 7.5 years of iOS experience, backend experience will help round out your skillset. If you continue down the mobile track you may get incrementally less benefit from additional years of experience as iOS developer. At this point you are a seasoned mobile developer and that core knowledge isn't going anywhere, it may help provide more options in the future if you developer additional skills in learning about and designing distributed systems. It is an entirely different problem space with it's own challenges. Learning the fundamentals of services and devops is a good place to start regardless of the language (Java, Go lang, Python)
What makes you think Apple won’t be around in a decade? It’s the platform with the most revenue.
Thanks for the answers! That is gonna help me a lot, it’s a tough decision to me and all input is welcome. ps: I never stated that Apple won’t be around in a decade. I’m asking that question to myself (and to you guys) that’s all. It’s a “what if?” kinda thing.
I have this same question OP. I only have about a year or so of iOS/tech experience and wondering when I should jump into backend

Definitely backend is more future proof
Can you mention any backend technologies which you think will have good future. Thanks.
