I had a virtual onsite the other day and I guess things went well enough because the final call was a chat with HR talking about about comp, reloc, benefits, etc. At one point the HR person asked if I’d cancel my other onsites if they made an offer. What’s the correct response here? If I say I want to finish the other onsites, would they take it as a lack of enthusiasm and potentially not make an offer? Update 1: After buttering me up for an offer they rejected me the day after I told them I didn’t want to cancel my other interviews 🤷🏻♂️ Update 2: Got a FAANG offer a few days later so it all worked out ✌🏻
What company
Bloomberg.
Lmao tell them to give you an offer that’ll make you want to cancel all your other interviews
It really depends, if you really want this offer tell them that you really liked the team/work and if the offer is good you will consider cancelling the other interviews. I was in a similar boat once and said I won’t and it didn’t go my way, but I also felt I didn’t like the team/work.
I tried to think from the company’s perspective: if they’ve invested all this time in sourcing you, phone screens, full day of on-site, and then finally they decide they want you — won’t they extend the offer regardless of how you answer?
I thought it’s kind of like a high pressure sales tactic or bluff on their part rather than something that could actually change their mind to not make an offer (?)
Easy way to get a few extra K. They give you a number, you ask for more $ and take the offer on the spot.
Depends. No one can answer it with certainty.
Elaborate?
What's your YOE/current TC?
4 YOE, currently in academia so nothing close to industry salary
They’re trying to make sure they don’t get in a bidding war. You’re trying to make sure you get an optimal TC. If you want to play the game, say no, but accept that they might not want to deal with the drama and not make an offer, or make one they expect you to counter against. Last time I was asked this I didn’t have much else in the pipeline, I responded that if I had a good offer I would accept it on the spot, and if it was not a good offer I would have to consider and wait. I also after getting the range let them know what sort of offer I would accept on the spot, and what sort of offer I would have to think on a while.
Thanks for the insights. Do you think declining to cancel other interviews could actually change the company’s mind to not make the offer though? Like, they wanted me, but only if I immediately cancel the other interviews?
They actually rejected me today and now I’m second guessing what I told the recruiter. I basically said I enjoyed meeting the team (true) but that I’d also like to let everything play out and then decide (also true). Regardless your strategy is much better - say you’d be willing to cancel if the offer meets your expectations.
Tell them if the offer is good you will. You don’t have to tell them you cancelled regardless
No, this is a sign that you might renege
Tell them that they need to offer you a very good TC for you to stop interviewing
The recruiter is just trying to asses how naive or how much you want this job (how much leverage he/she has in this end). I wouldn’t cancel if you want to have more negotiation power.
Regardless of whether you actually cancel the other interviews, what would you tell the recruiter though?
Just tell them something in the lines that you will decide that once they produce an offer
