Awesome. Doing that right away. Appreciate you.
Yep Intuitive are a rocket ship for sure.
Can I ask why you don’t want to practice medicine? There is a huge shortage of doctors in this county.
Honestly, based off from statistics and yearly match rate of medical graduates into residency shows that this countries need doctors. About 30,000+ medical graduates apply for residency programs yearly. But it takes a lot more to match into a residency program after medical school. I’m foreign trained and I’m still required to take the licensing exams as I’m back to the US. No worries on that as I’m still taking it but it’s freaking expensive. Taking all the board exams, including purchasing study materials, applying for residency slots and traveling for interviews would set you 25-30k back, depending on your year of graduation, scores on your boards and speciality you are interested to train in. It is highly competitive. Then after spending this much, there’s still no guarantee that you will match into a residency program to train you that year. Because when you rank programs and they rank you back, it’s a gamble—More like throwing a dart with your eyes closed. There’s an algorithm they use for that. I’m still yet to understand how that works. But residency applications is a big hassle to deal with. If you don’t get in the first year, then you apply the following year, you repeat the application process shelling out thousands and taking out more loans. It’s depressing especially when no one wants to hire you because you are “a half baked doc”. The best most clinics can do is hire you as a medical assistant or scribe and pay you $15/hr. The match rate for foreign medical graduates is about 55%. I sincerely want to practice medicine but the question is, at what cost? N.B. In residency you get paid 45-55k P.A.
Make sense 😊
Do you have any interest in Chief Medical Officer or Medical Director roles?
I’ve been looking for similar positions but looks like I’ve not been lucky every-time I apply. Any referrals would be greatly appreciated. Quick question, don’t you have to already complete residency or have an active medical license for such roles?
WTF he doesn’t even have a US medical license or a board cert and you’re telling him to be a CHIEF medical officer 😂?? He’s FMG....that’s like Caribbean doctor dude.
Get excited about analytics and ML and you could jump into a ton of opportunities much quicker than you probably think (consulting, specialist, advisor, etc...)
Getting excited about analytics is easy but maneuvering my way in finding the jobs and networking with folks of similar background seems to be challenging. I don’t know a lot of people into that but I’m willing to following through if I’m placed in the right direction.
Come work at vertex on clinical development (planning clinical trials) as a medical director
That would be amazing. Please how do I apply, would you know if an active medical license would be required? I know most PI’s in clinical development are phd or doctors.
Careers.vrtx.com Search for MD and that should show what is available. Most of the current openings right now are for people that are board certified/eligible (associate director/director level), but they definitely hire people straight out of med school
Health insurance companies are always hiring for medical director roles. Good paying jobs.
I’ve been looking into that as well. Looks like they smile mostly on those with MBA or MHA. Would you suggest getting a degree or certification in that?
If you decide to maintain a career in administration, an MHA or even MPH is a great asset, but definitely not a deal breaker if you don't have one.
I’m a physician recruiter at Oak Street Health. Many folks take a year off after med school and join our clinical informatics team. It’s great exposure and an awesome way to develop professional relationships with providers. Check us out: https://www.oakstreethealth.com/careers Hope this helps!
What are the odds! I came across your company’s profile 2 days back and was looking to apply as a medical scribe/clinical informatics specialist.
Dude go be a doctor and make a shit load of money
Copied from linked in: "We saw how easy it was to take physician’s money, and no one stopped us,” said the proud health insurance executive. “So we applied those same methods to the employers, and wow, look, no one stopped us.” Smiles and handshakes. “This year, we even took a whole bunch of government money, and guess what... no one stopped us.” Applause. “We are healthcare geniuses.” Businesses are closing, physicians are leaving, and fewer Americans than ever can afford health insurance. But look who has record profits. If you are listening, America, your family doctor is trying to tell you something. Look at the signs. You’re getting ripped off. Have you noticed how hard it is to find a family physician? See all the marketing of physician replacements? These are signs that something is wrong. Our healthcare system is sick. You can see it in the way PCPs are treated. That’s why PCPs are disappearing. Losing doctors is a symptom. Our loss hurts you. That’s a disease. Then it hurts America. That’s a pandemic. Pandemic of sick healthcare. The cure for sick healthcare begins by saving your PCP. Don’t get tricked. There is no replacement.
There is a replacement. They are called nurse practitioners.
They are a replacement if all you need is a flu shot. If you have confusing symptoms and you're trying to figure out what's wrong a family doctor will help you figure out what tests and specialists you need to figure it out. In theory good insurance will allow to to go directly to a specialist, but good luck figuring out which one you need.
If you have a solid business acumen and know tech (or want to learn). I would suggest looking into Clinical informatics for clinical product strategy roles
Thanks. I understand a bit of tech and willing to learn more. I do have a solid business acumen. Would a boot camp or a masters degree in Clinical informatics be advise-able?
I would suggest researching Graduate Medical Education Programs for this medical subspecialty. They might be advertised as “Clinical Informatics Fellowships” and targeted for post-residents but I’ve heard there are plenty of backdoor Clinical Informatics research positions that accept Medical Students into CIFs. At the end of the day you are competing against 21 year olds that have zero knowledge of medical logic. So the clinical informatics GME programs would help guide you through learning tech but with a medical logic spin.
