anyone have any experience/success with this? I am wondering whether I should consider working towards an SWE type of role.. I applied for a role at Google that requires some HW background and heard back from the recruiter. The interview process will be similar to an SWE role though.. I need to prepare really hard but also not sure if I have to start my career from scratch (even if I do make it). any thoughts? background: - am in a HW group but have a decent amount of low level, c/asm/firmware programming experience - not doing hardcore design/analog but working at System level and bandwidth/performance analysis reason to change: - current work/experience is closer to SW than hardcore hardware - Generally tend to be better/interested at SW coding than going deep into HW (PD, timing, CDC etc) - money is NOT the reason (yes, seriously) Thanks.
Try asking in the sw section.
Will do, thanks!
Current TC!
Not quite relevant to the topic, but, TC is comparable to HW jobs. Not sure if I would be able to maintain the same if the SW switch is made.. TC: ~280k
If you figured anything out, please share the wisdom
I got a Masters degree in SW, and it was easier to make the switch in current company and maintain level than in new company
Ah, ok. Thanks for sharing..
I remember there were few threads on people attending bootcamp or udacity courses, building side projects on github and making the jump to SW roles. Try searching for career transition or similar keywords. Internal change of profile within company is generally easier compared to directly applying elsewhere.
You can look at Georgia tech’s OMSCS program. Use it to gain knowledge and leetcode to prepare for interviews.
I know a few guys did the change, and they all said it took a big learning curve, basically all the things people tell you to prep for interview also help prep you for the jobs too, so try them.
Thanks for the suggestions.. Google shares a lot of prep material so that helps.. or help someone who wants to know what it takes to make the interview..
@OP, ok to DM?
Anyone..? Either this kind of transition isn’t very common or the success ratio is quite low or I may need to make the journey and hopefully live to write the tale..;)
