after a fairly antagonistic interview with Amazon last week, I somehow got an offer today...at $15k less than current TC. And at a lower level. And with a probable reduction in scope—though this is hard to compare because Amazon’s scope can be considerable. So, obviously I reject this. The question is if I should elaborate why, or simply say that I am not inclined. Not ruling Amazon out in the future thus do not want to burn bridges. Current TC: $300k Amazon offer: $285k EDIT: I told them my exact TC with breakdown before the on-site was scheduled. And then repeated it to the recruiter during the prep call.
100% don’t do it. Why would you take a pay cut?
Upside in stock value over time? I'm losing money at my current employer 😢
If you I think the stock will go up, keep your higher TC and buy Amazon stock.
Just say this exact same thing to your recruiter. They may change the offer if they learn about your current TC.
Oh they new my current TC. That’s why I just laughed when I got the offer today.
Maybe that's the HM's limit for org/headcount reasons
Why not make a counter offer? Also, what's the position?
UX. Will try a counter :-) one never knows.
$300k for UX? Are you a director?
“I appreciate the offer. Unfortunately, after careful consideration I have decided not to proceed with my candidacy. I encourage you to reach out in the future for any new opportunities.”
Obvious as this advice you’ve shared might seem, it’s really helpful. Thanks!
Well worded and very professional.
If the interview was antagonistic imagine what working there must be like.
Yeah, if not a team you can work well with, then no. I actually liked my interviewers. They were very helpful!
Their initial offer is always way low. You can usually come up 30%. What level, role, loc is that?
Not true I got a top of the band offer as the initial offer - but they knew I was awaiting responses from other faang So really depends on situation
It’s an L6 (senior) ux role. Seattle.
Amazon will try to place you into a lower band-“everyone” gets this treatment coming in. Lower comp is a hard one however. Did you give “low numbers” when they indicated that an offer was on the way perhaps?
Maybe amzn didn’t know his current salary
No, I told them my current compensation in detail—my base is 210k, which is 50k over AMZN’s cap in Seattle. I can live with a lower base, but I of course want equal TC.
Burn the bridge. Amazon is a ship waiting to sink. Pretty soon those guys will reach out to you for referral help.
It doesn't matter, they'll still reach out for other positions regardless
Saying no to unlimited 🍌🍌🍌?
What is the story behind bananas?
Speaking seriously you should negotiate for a higher TC if you like the job.
