So I have two offers and want some assistance on choosing the right one. I'm a Program Manager with 12 yoe and currently with Amazon as an L6 in Seattle (TC 235k 145/90k). I have two standing offers from Facebook and Qualcomm. Facebook - not sure of level, I asked but was given a vague answer. The role is interesting and very similar to what I'm doing except I'll be reporting directly into a VP. I'm worried about the negative press at FB but it is still a tech giant. I'd also have to move to Menlo Park. TC 278 (190/38/50). Qualcomm - director level is n San Diego. Would be the most senior position I've held. Great growth potential in role and could be VP within 5-8 yrs. Also I love San Diego which has much cheaper childcare. I'm worried about Qualcomm with their Apple lawsuit and business model. I'm also worried about future prospects coming from Qualcomm. Would be the only lower tiered company on my resume. Also not many other big companies in San Diego. QualcommTC: 295. Just got the offer verbally. The base is 185k I'll update when I get the offer letter with TC break down.
San Diego for the win!
While I also love San Diego, if you wanted to leave Qualcomm, you might have to move, unless you wanted to work for a biotech. There are less well paying jobs in San Diego then in Seattle or Bay Area.
That is my fear with Qualcomm. It may also give my wife fewer choices.
Yes. That is a real concern.
Working for a VP directly is enticing if you’re good. But that means WLB sucks. Qualcomm WLB is probably good
Good point. I think I am good but I also have two young kids.
Qualcomm.
Reason? It seems like a lot of people here only care about Faang + Unicorns is that only for tech?
How did you get a director role at Qcom with L6 in amazon? Are you a manager at amazon? Qcom is the best. I lived in San Diego and dread every moment I am in Seattle. Would move back in a heart beat.
I am a manager. Even though I was only an L6 I was a leader in my area. I've presented to multiple S team members in the past couple of months as a SME in my area. The role is probably an L7 role and I expected to get promoted soon. I have also held very senior positions before Amazon.
Very cool. Good luck. Qcom is a great company to work for. Really good WLB
Qualcomm. The position is pretty high and will look like an upward mobility. Cost of living in SD is much better than Bay Area. People and weather is much nicer with lower taxes making family life much better. The only downside is like someone mentioned is the number of opportunities. If your wife is flexible, you can definitely have much better family life in SD. Good Luck OP!
I always hate when people don't update these with the decision. We negotiated with QCOM and they increased their offer to 325k. That mixed with my aversion to Facebook and their direction led me to choose Qualcomm. Thanks for everything blind.
Nice job negotiating! Good luck in SD, it’s a great city!
Very good number for San Diego
The FB comp in MP nowhere near equals what you’re getting at Amazon. Not worth it. Qualcomm is definitely enticing though!
