What’s a long commute for you?

My current commute one way is 1.5 hours by car, about 45 to 1 hour by motorcycle.

Where do you live? Such a large gap 🚗 vs 🏍

Microsoft Foo-cault Feb 9, 2018

I would imagine Marysvillle. Motorcycles can use HOV lanes.

I live in NYC and currently work in NJ. Federally, motorcycles can use any HOV lane unless it explicitly says no motorcycles, which is rare. But there’s a lot of congestion going from NYC to NJ and in between due to the Lincoln Tunnel and GWB.

Your less than signs are backwards. Consider me the sign nazi.

Duck Creek sanic OP Feb 9, 2018

You’re reading them wrong. More than 15 minutes. More than 30 minutes. More than 45 minutes. More than an hour. These are typically reference points for commutes. Some people’s commutes may be 30 minutes, so anything less would be optimal, and anything more MAY indeed be annoying af.

Does 31 minutes considered more than 15 minutes?

Google jghyrh Feb 9, 2018

I can tolerate up to an hour if I'm doing something useful with my time (riding a bike and getting exercise in, or sitting on a bus and reading). To me, "needing to drive" (any amount) is an unacceptable commute, and I design my logistics around that.

Duck Creek sanic OP Feb 9, 2018

I concur. That’s why I love taking my motorcycle in when I can. I can lane split and go much quicker than in my car (without being subject to HWP scrutiny in NJ at least) and it’s also fun and when I get in, it’s an adrenaline wake up so no need for caffeine. With the car, I usually listen to audiobooks or YouTube or podcasts. I do WFH most days though. And I won’t be here for much longer as I got other offers and will be interviewing for a few more places.

Motorcycles can also get great commute numbers in California, by lane splitting!

Duck Creek sanic OP Feb 9, 2018

Yes! I love it! Though it’s not legal in every other state, in NJ they tend to not care. If you’re visiting here in NYC though, I recommend not doing it. NYPD already hates motorcyclists as it is.

I am just less and less comfortable riding in traffic, the risk is quite high for the saved hour a day and literally ever day there is a report of a rider down on the bay area highways.

I used to commute from Seattle to Graham. 3 hours wasn’t out of the norm. Now I drive 8 miles and it takes 30-50 minutes depending on time of day. 15 is short, 60 is long. In between is “normal”.

It takes me 10 minutes for 8 miles. One benefit of living in a small town

I'm specifically moving to a new place this summer where I can walk to work because I hate commuting any appreciable distance.

The question makes sense for greater than. What is a long commute for you? I voted greater than 30 minutes.
