#software #engineering #manager Hi Everyone, I am a software engineering manager at Google. I love the team, the work and the work life balance here at Google. I worked at Amazon as a manager for several years and their horrible work life balance still haunts me. I was reached out because a recruiter from Meta and I wonder how is the culture and the work life balance over there. Can anybody share their experience especially comparing Meta with Google & Amazon if you can.
Much much worse than Amazon! Don’t even think about this firm
Cant imagine it being worse Mind sharing your experiences
My team has been working 24x7 since Q3, with a small break in late Dec-early Jan. Multiple people have churned but little respite
Do not listen to Blind. I relied heavily on this forum in rejecting an E6 offer in 2022 at low-mid 100s. Pip and layoffs are always a concern, but God, I would rather work on impactful projects or get fired trying than being stuck at my current place and let my skills rot. If I am half decent, I will get hired at another place. Immigration issues not being a concern. Google overhired way too many people, including me, to do shit internal tooling work that would get people to giggle to me at my previous place where I had a high flying trajectory. Going forward, if we want to remain relevant in this industry and get paid well, We are all expected to do intense 40-45-hour work every week, and I imagine Meta would be no different now. Heck, I am doing that Google out of my own accordance because I am super determined not to let my current role slow me down. Almost all internal roles at G require AL/ML or a knowledge of a particular PA stack. Don't let BLIND blind you.
It only works if you are not on a visa
Agreed. Works for Dual income families, too.
What is your TC at G and how much difference @Meta
if hired as M2 you’ll be cool. as M1 you have limited career progression perspectives. in terms of work your only true work is PSC. ofc you can also do politics and empire building, but overall there are zero expectations from you to drive direction or accountable it’s all on your reports. ideally you should pick E6 as your working mule and abuse it
I think I am well qualified to be an M2 but recruiter told me that they don’t have such positions open
go m1 then if you like tc. overall m1 is much chiller than ic6 for example. i doubt it’s anywhere close to amazon
There are teams where people work 35 hrs/weeks and teams that work 95 hrs/week… it all depends. Also if you are working for promo it will be rough. M1 honestly will be tough, especially during PSC (1.5 times per year)
Avoid if you’re interviewing for M1. Manager path is way slower and worse than the IC path rn.
Worst!! If you see a team that has good WLB in Meta then reorg is few days away.
