0th place: Live in a cheap European city and work remotely for a US company.
Yup. Actually plan to investigate this more. Do you know any good strategies and resources for finding such jobs?
Surprised to see Zurich at the top. Not friendly for foreigners, limited opportunities. I know a very large number of expats who move from Amsterdam to London after the 30% ruling ended. Very few move to Zurich. It should be: 3. Berlin 2. Amsterdam 1. London
Zurich still has high pay lowish taxes and good standard of living
High pay but high cost of living. Standard of living is good in most of Western Europe, Zurich doesn’t stand out. Definitely not top of the mind for European tech workers. The only few people I know who moved from Amsterdam to Zurich, went to Google. It was the company not the city that mattered.
Those who call Zurich a tech hub probably never lived there. Among the big names listed, only Google has a large enough office. Others only look for highly specialised people. Excluding these big names, local companies are boring.
Not necessarily. In the companies listed there there are also positions in Zurich for non highly specialised people. But I agree that on average is much more specialised/smaller than cities in the US or London. Other cities in Europe are not that much better in terms of market size tbh
That's true. I would only call London and Berlin as tech hubs or at least "places with a decent amount of opportunities" in Europe. Other cities are just... others.
London if you work in finance. Amsterdam/Zurich otherwise.
Extended list out this Friday: https://open.substack.com/pub/theeuropeanengineer/p/top-20-cities-for-software-engineers?r=26g7fc&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web There was also another intermediate article published a couple of weeks ago (top 10 cities): https://theeuropeanengineer.substack.com/p/top-10-cities-for-software-engineers
