Approached by FB leadership recruiter for EM role. After phone screen (People management questions and systems ive built deep dive) with another EM, didnt hear anything for 2 days and have onsites over next two weeks. Emailed recruiter for follow up and shared timeline for consideration and perhaps reasoning hoping not to seem inpatient. Received very quick response indicating team decided to work with other candidates who are more aligned for their needs. However, the email also CCed a software engineering sourcer whom i was introduced to tell me about "tech lead" (e6?) opportunities. I have about 4 years of EM people manager experience. The phone screen appeared to go well and i wasnt outright rejected I suppose. I can only assume i didnt have the best answers for people interview but maybe i interviewed well and tech background aligns with FB? I asked for more feedback but havent heard anything yet. Since this sourcer appears to support software engineering, im not sure that person would be a pathway to discuss one of many EM roles open. Thoughts?
Ive had 8 directs for 3 years. I was asked about how Ive promoted engineers and let them go. I dont think i had the best answers here. However, they did include PIP discussion. Does this one shake with a leadership recruiter kinda make me stuck as only IC consideration with facebook completely for now?
Here is my take/experience: hiring for EM from outside is tough and FB is very selective. IC hiring on the other hand is standard process and they know what to look for. So, looks like they found a candidate they like and they moved you to SWE pipeline. Depending on your phone screen questions, they might make you do another phone screen. They are always hiring senior engineers and if you can make the cut, it’s a easy hire. For FB, it might be better going in as an IC and then move to EM. however, if you don’t want to do IC work, don’t interview.
Have you fired or PIPed anybody? If you haven’t, then they decided you’re inexperienced and you’re a tech lead.
