Hi all, (Googlers especially) Current L6 Amazon SDM with AI/ML/big data background with TC touching $450+ due to stock growth. 8 yrs total yoe and 4 years in management. HC approved and I need to negotiate comp with Google for L6 EM next week. I have competing offers both Amazon internal and others. I am planning to set expectations at $550 TC with a $300 base. For bay area. Am I in the right ball park? What is the range for this role? Can someone link that big thread where the ranges were aggregated? Unable to search and find now. Any tips welcome.
I’m not at that level so take my words with a grain of salt. I think $550 TC is a bit high but doable with strong competing offers. The 300 base is the unreasonable part IMHO. 250 is a more reasonable base for L6, although still a little high. With $250k base, your target bonus will be $50k, which will get you to $300k. That leaves about $250k for annual equity. That’s $1m vested over 4 years.
My estimation: Expect around $400-$450k default offer, closer to $200k base. To move up from there you’ll need external offers from competitor companies higher than that. Might be different if you have a research background in ML with top pedigree but I don’t think that’s the case.
I do have research background. Maybe not super pedigree. But I have three patents. Seems like I should bring this in as a talking point for domain expertise/hard to hire skills.
450 will not match my Amazon comp actually after premium market adjustment (CoL)
This is an eng manager role. I will most likely have scientists and engineers reporting to me for the problem to be solved.
L6 at G with 8 yoe is kinda unheard of. Normally you wouldn’t even get L5 w/o >10 yoe. Comp wise, 600k in CA is like 420k in WA. So I’d really think twice before moving there. There’re plenty of positions in Seattle/Kirkland.
Well I have the HC approval. I interviewed with directors and vp in and high level ICs including a scientist in the loop. So your indication that this is rare should work in my favor. Thanks. I want to be in SV for my long term career. Sick of Seattle weather too.
You can always fly away for weather if it bothers you. The money you get in Seattle can buy you a better quality vacation, and it’s already the second SV. Anyhow, that’s your life of course:) How old are you btw? No family/kids I assume?
Don't expect base to be anywhere close to $300K. I've seen L7 SWEs at Google with a lower base. So no way you will get $300K at L6. $550K might be the absolute max in terms of TC and you might not even get that without competing offers.
Thanks.
It is possible to get more than $600k TC. I have seen L5s getting $1.5m in stock compensation but they had competing offers.
Seems low outside of base. A buddy of mine was offered $295 base with a lot more stock than you’re asking for and it was a business role.
Ok so maybe I push TC ask to 600. Thanks.
