21 year old optimizing for career growth. Here are my three options-> Zillow SDE TC: 160 + 20k RSU/Year AWS Associate Solution Architect: 150 + 90k RSU/Amazon shitty vesting schedule (Year1: 5% | Y2:15% |20% every 6 months) AWS SDE: 180 + 100k RSU/Amazon shitty vesting schedule Note: Low-key dislike coding all the time. I'm good at it but would prefer talking to ppl/presenting/managing. Don't care about WLB. I'm hungry.
Zillow gonna fire you like the last batch, Amazon gonna pip you to meet quotas, you dug yourself a hole here boy
Lmao. So should I do solution architect then to minimize risk of pip and leave free time for entrepreneurial ventures
🤷♂️. Might be cool if you think a future customer facing role would be good for you. Lots of millionaires in these customer facing non tech roles, assuming you can clean up well and know your stuff
Both with bad job security, be careful
Ex amazon here. Great place to learn scale. If you don’t like it, move on. I was there for almost 4 years. Learnt a LOT about building for scale. Many teams inside if you get a bad one. Can’t be dev planned for 6 months in. So have luxury to switch.
Zillow. No brainer and upside is their stock is at rock bottom. I don't think it will fall below 50. Also Z won't fire you. They laid off 2000 employees and none from engineering so it is better in every sense.
^^This. Get that low strike price now. A year from now you’re going to be glad you did.
What are your basis for confidently predicting Z stock hitting the bottom. If the amount of drawdown in stock value (from $200 high to $50 low) is your criterion, then there are some other companies which fell harder, go for them. A professional trader/investor would laugh at this attitude. This is pure gut-feeling based prediction, which are known to lead to bad investment decisions. (Essentially you invest your large chunk salary when you accept RSUs as part of TC)
Amazon SDE is a great brand on your resume and amazon is not that bad. Some teams at amazon are actually very good. Amazon SDE no brainer.
Amazon SDE for sure. Stay for 2-3 years here and switch again.
Despite of reputation, Amazon is amazing for experience and resume.
Depends on what you want to do. If it is the role I am thinking of, Solution Architect is like a pre-sales engineer role. The others are coding. If you want to go meet with customers and what have you, that might be the way to go. Probably less intense on the sales side. If you want a pure SDE path, then Zillow or Amazon SDE.... As everyone knows Amazon is difficult, Amazon might be better. It is probably overblown.
Although, SDE will pay more than pre-sales engineer. SDE is more respected as you are building products vs demoing and explaining how to deploy stuff.
OP keep in mind risks of Amazon Zillow isn’t going to fire you if you’re coworkers are all adderall junkies IMO — Zillow is a good enough brand to get into FAANG later if you want Source: did exactly that
I hear career growth is slow at Zillow. Would that make the boomerang harder/slower?
Zillow is a mid sized company. Whoever told you that either works at a startup or for Facebook Zillow I’m sure moves fast enough
